DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE IF YOU ENJOY QUALITY FOOD. Incredibly disappointing. Would give a zero if possible. How anyone can be proud to serve this food, on Lygon Street, and claim to be authentic Italian, is a joke. It is worse than a chain restaurant. Loud, squished together like sardines, stressed servers and cheap serveware and serviettes. Meals should not take under 5 minutes to come to the table. We knew we were in trouble when powdered parmesan was put on the table. Never would powdered parmesan be acceptable at a decent Italian restaurant. Pasta course came to the table at the same time as the secondi (main) and pizza. Overcooked fettuccine, underseasoned stodge that had no care put into it, but so much cream that it was inedible. I sent it back. Bland boiled potatoes and capsicum were apparently the chefs choice of side veg for the veal scalopini. Chalky and gluggy risotto that stood up on the plate like a mountain. Risotto should not do that. The portions were huge and not in a good way. Pizza was acceptable, though pre-made bases from a packet should be reflected in the price. The salami was flavourful and made up for the bland toppings on the pizza. No one checked in on how our meals were as they have too many tables to look after. Clearly it's all about turnover, especially when we had to pay at the counter - gotta get those tables cleared. Could be ok if the price was 30% less and it was advertised as cheap and cheerful, not as authentic. Sent back pasta was still on the bill when we went to pay, but the girl on the til quickly took it off when we explained we sent the dish back. My guess is people send dishes back fairly regularly. Way better places to go, don't waste your time or money. Cannot understand the reviews...
Read moreSuch a great place for Italian cuisine!!! Couldnt recommend this place enough.
We took my best friend here for dinner after her suggestion. She told us that her family from Sydney always come to Tiamo whenever they come down to Melbourne. Thus, we have quite high expectation for this restaurant and we were super excited to try the place out. And we were not disappointed at all!
The food was terrific. I especially enjoyed the prawn pizza - fresh and authentic. The prawns were super crunchy. Mushroom pizza was ok. My second best dish was probably the black ink risotto - very creamy and filling. My friend loved the marinara pasta and said the tomato sauce was super light and refreshing. Calamari was nice too. Everything was yummy and tasty, full of flavors.
Price is reasonable for the portion and quality.
Service is top-level. Food was served quite quickly despite being super busy on the weekend. Staffs were really friendly and accommodating especially the manager/owner guy.
They have both indoor and outdoor settings. The space is a bit restricted as tables are set up super closedly. However, nice vibe with cool interior design.
It gets crowded most of the time especially weekend dinner time so its better if you can book your table ahead. Cant book through phone but through their website. Cut off booking time is 4pm daily. But if you cant book the table, walking-in is fine too. The queue can be seemed super long but it doesnt take that long to get a table. They manage to arrange the tables super quickly so dont hesitate to queue and wait a bit :)
Overall, highly recommended. This will be one of our favourite italian restaurant from now on. Will definitely come back for many other times to try all their dishes. Keep up the great...
Read moreTaimo is a Lygon Street institution, well-known for its authentic Italian food and warm, attentive service. Today, it certainly lived up to its reputation. To celebrate my daughter’s university graduation, this was her restaurant of choice and it didn’t disappoint. The decor is charming, paying tribute to the history of the owners over the years, which adds a lovely personal touch to the dining experience. We started with the garlic focaccia topped with mozzarella, a delicious way to take the edge off our appetite. For mains, we shared the wagyu beef penne and the spaghetti Bolognese. Both dishes were hearty, flavourful, and perfectly portioned for three to share. The food is wholesome and satisfying, though a little on the pricey side at $78 for two mains and one starter. That said, it seems to reflect the standard cost of dining out these days. Good to Know: Dietary requirements are catered for—just let the staff know. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, with heaters for colder days. High chairs are available for young children. Wheelchair access is available, though the toilets may present a challenge. Weekend surcharge: 10%. Public holiday surcharge: 15%. Parking on Lygon Street can be hit and miss, with time limits—public transport is a good option. Not BYO. The wine and beer list is simple but sufficient. Staff were friendly and quick to seat us, offering water and menus promptly.
A memorable meal for a special occasion, @tiamomelbourne remains a reliable choice for classic Italian dining in Melbourne.
