ORDERED (OCT 2024): 🥖 Garlic bread: Crunchy ciabatta bread with real garlic butter ($12.00) + grilled mozzarella cheese ($4.00) 🍗 Universal chicken schnitzel ($17.90) It was $30.40 for my portion! REVIEW: ❤ The garlic bread is perfect to split between 4 people. We had enough for 2 slices each. The ciabatta is crunchy, as promised, which makes it so satisfying to bite in to! 🤤 Universal still has the best mushroom sauce I've ever had. 🍄💕 It tastes amazing with the chicken schnitzel that's too big for me to finish by myself. It's fantastic value for money. I would still recommend Universal. If you line up before 6:30pm, you can get in relatively easily! If after... be prepared to wait. -------------- ORDERED (2023): 🧀 Cheese Doughnuts: That's Amore Cheese air-dried mozzarella, crispy, fried & gooey on the inside ($14.00) 🍝 Entree Penne Bolognese: Traditional homemade beef sauce ($15.90) 🐓 Universal Chicken Schnitzel: Handmade chicken breast schnitzel, served with our special mushroom sauce, served with Universal's beer battered chips & italian slaw ($28.00) REVIEW: Universal is truly an iconic restaurant in the Melbourne scene. I've tried numerous restaurants for their mushroom sauce, but none compares to the mushroom sauce with the Universal Chicken Schnitzel. The mushroom sauce is decadent, slightly sweet and savoury with that iconic mushroom earthy taste. It's truly unbeatable and I have quarterly dreams about it!! Everything else is okay, but the Universal chicken schnitzel is a MUST order. Big crumbled chicken breast that's great to either try to eat on your own... or split between two. We tried to be ambitious and split all the food, but we couldn't finish the pasta. Even the entree size is generous! Great portions, great flavours, great quality. It's hard to beat what Universal provides.

A Lygon institution - amazing value for money We finally got around to eating at the Universal on Lygon St. We arrived around 5.30 and the place was already starting to fill up. Luckily we were seated almost immediately and my son was given something to colour in. This is the first time I've seen that level of service in a restaurant on Lygon Street so shout out to the Universal for doing this. We ordered the Chicken Parma and seafood Marinara pasta in algio olio sauce. The chicken parma is the star at $14 and a portion big enough to feed 2. I shared it with my son and we only just managed to finish it. The salad was swapped out for coleslaw. The coleslaw itself was ok but the chicken parma made up for it. Ot was perfectly done with the right amout of crispiness, sauce, parma ham and cheese. The chips were also very well done. The marinara pasta was ok. My wife thought it needed more salt but I thought it was fine. Between the two and a half of us, we were not able to finish everything. The service was ok. I have nothing special to call out about it but it wasn't terrible either. Overall, the Universal represents amazing value for money considering how big the portions are.

I've been a regular at Universal Restaurant for over ten years, and boy, has it grown! It's pretty incredible how much this place has expanded, but one thing hasn't changed a bit: the crazy long wait time. My partner and I got there at 5pm, and there was already a queue forming outside! We ordered our old favorite, the universal chicken schnitzel, a new dish - the grilled salmon with risotto, and a special apple pie milkshake. I've gotta be honest, the food took a while to come out. But the milkshake? Totally worth it. It was like sipping on a liquid apple pie, seriously good stuff, although it did cost $12, which seemed a bit steep. Now, the schnitzel. It's been consistently good over the years, but I noticed a few changes since my last visit about 6 months ago. The price, for starters, has gone up. Not surprising, but still, a bummer. The chips were different too, but the biggest letdown was the coleslaw. It was nothing like the good old coleslaw they used to serve - this new one was kinda low quality and too sour for my liking. It's a real shame because the chicken-chips-coleslaw combo was what made this dish a winner. Now, the chicken is the only part I really look forward to. The salmon dish was alright, although it was served a bit too cold for my taste. We sent it back to the kitchen, and it came out hot and tasted quite good. All in all, it's hard to ignore the fact that Universal Restaurant is still a big hit in the area, despite a bunch of not-so-good reviews. But for me, it's getting harder to recommend this place. The prices keep going up, and it feels like they're cutting corners by swapping the chips and coleslaw for cheaper alternatives. It just doesn't feel like the same old Universal Restaurant that I fell in love with. But, hey, that milkshake though - still a game-changer.

JUST WALK AWAY. Easily one of the top 3 worst places I've been to, this place is clearly overrated. We came here with high expectations after reading the amount of amazing 5* reviews, the queue outside the door was promising as well. The restaurant was packed, the wait wasn't very long (10 mins) and we thought well we are lucky tonight! Whilst we waited we glanced at everyone's plates and thought the food looked really appetising, as soon as we got the menu's we didn't take too long to order and settled for the chicken soup to start and two pastas. I ordered a fettucine with the carbonara like sauce with chicken and my partner ordered a penne with the bolognaise sauce. The moment the soup came we knew we might have been wrong. The soup looked quite unappealing, nevertheless we tried it and it was just bad. Lacked basic salt and seasoning. The pastas only got worse. The portions were grotesquely big but the taste by far the worst. The pastas don't feel fresh or gourmet, everything tastes like it came out of a can. Without even having completed a third of our dishes we left, the waiters didn't seem bothered that we barely ate so I'm guessing this is either a regular occurance or they really couldn't care less. Even the chicken on my pasta had a really odd texture like it was grilled once then boiled again so it just crumbled in the mouth. Yes it may not be a pricey place but you could pay a bit more or even the same for much much better Italian food in Melbourne. Walk away when you get the chance, don't fall for the reviews like we did.

⭐️ Rated low for the wait service. Our mains were served without the dessert so we thought it would come after we finished. Plates were cleared and we waited 15 mins for the dessert. Didn’t come so we reminded the waiter. He then had a bit of a chat to the table next to us and I’m pretty sure he forgot as he got distracted. We waited another 15 minutes before deciding to leave. When paying I advised the staff we waited 30 mins for dessert that never came even when we reminding the waiter - He didn’t acknowledge or apologise for our poor experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Now to the whole experience. There will almost always be a line at universal so just be prepared to wait and know it will be worth it. The servings are quite big and if you can’t finish it, you can take it home which is one thing I love about universal. You could even share between two. The Parma is the most popular, if it’s your first time I would recommend - you can’t go wrong with it. ($16.00) We went on a busy Saturday night, ordered our Parma and got it pretty much straight away!

I visited at around 11:30am on a Saturday with 3 others. When we arrived there was plenty of space, but by the time we left at around 1 or 1:30pm there was a queue out the door. We ordered a cocktail jug ($55), a garlic pizza ($12), a marinara main with red sauce and fettuccine ($25.90), a margherita main ($17.90), and a side of beer battered chips ($12). The drink took so long to come even though it wasn't busy, and they also never came to our table to take another drink order when we had finished it. The food came out fairly quickly. It was nice but nothing special. I think my expectations were too high because I always see people lining up to go here. I will say that the food was good value for money. My friends eventually wanted to leave because they felt like the waiters were waiting for our table (because of the queue), which was a bit awkward. Overall it was alright but I won't go there again and I think there are better options. Also vegetarian options were not very good.
