I have dined here multiple times and service was never this bad until last night. Arrived at 7:30pm with my husband and ordered 2 bowls of their signature Sui Cao without noodles. Waited and waited, no food in sight. About 15 mins later, the waiter brought a big plate of fried rice to us, we said no we never ordered that. He looked confused and took the fried rice to the next table. Waited another half an hour, still no food, others who came after us all got their food already, we started to feel frustrated. We asked the waiter, he said "ok, ok, just be patient and wait". 5 mins later the waiter brought out 1 bowl of Sui Cao with noodles, and we said no noodles, and we ordered 2 bowls not 1 anyway. He looked confused and took the bowl to a random table and the customer said no and he took it back to the kitchen. We then asked the lady who took our order initially, she was shocked that we were still just waiting and apologised and told us to wait 10 mins and the kitchen will prepare the food right away. Waited another 10 mins, saw 2 bowls being pushed out on the trolley, we were excited, but the waiter took both bowls to another couple who just came in. They looked a bit confused but just started eating. At this point my husband got so angry he just wanted to leave. As we got up to leave I told the waiter that we waited too long without food so we're leaving, he just smiled and said ok. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS WAITER??? I observed him the whole time while waiting for the food and he is literally incapable of bringing out the food to the correct table, why is he outside and not inside the kitchen doing something else useful? He walks extremely slow (he's old so fair enough) but constantly looking confused and putting food down at a random table hoping it's the right one, if people wave no he proceeds to bring it to the nearest table and hope it's right again, and he was never apologetic. At one point he was gonna put down food at the wrong table and the boss looked angry and pointed him to bring it to a different table. Sigh... We left after 55 mins hungry and disappointed. Not sure if I'll ever return again, their signature dish is nice but the service was so bad, unless they replace the waiter. Because I'm pretty sure the kitchen was receiving orders and making food properly, it was just that waiter that...

Having had the flu and not eaten out for two weeks, I was eager to have some tasty Vietnamese food in one of the best streets in Melbourne for Asian cuisine. Alas, I was disappointed. My 19 yo son, friend and myself came to Vinh-Ky around 7.30pm and it seemed reasonably busy. Reviews looked promising. We were seated and given menus but it took 10 minutes for any order to be taken. I love duck so enquires on how it was prepared and it sounded good so I ordered the West Lake Duck. My son ordered beef with vegetables and noodles. Entree was a serve of San Chou Bai, spring rolls and chicken satay skewers. Add a coke and water and we were done. Our tea arrived fairly quickly and then we waited. Twenty minutes and no water and no coke. Then the San Choi bai arrived. Five minutes later the satay. Felt like I’d been taken back to the 70’s with odd looking chicken with just dreadful satay sauce that tasted like it was from a bottle. My son’s meal arrived. Noodles slightly burnt and the whole thing was that old style gluggy meal. He didn’t finish it. My duck arrived and although was okay, for $24 I expect better. Duck was over cooked. I asked where the spring rolls were plus the water. They took another ten minutes by which time we’d finished our main course. Spring rolls were average. $79 for meal and none of us enjoyed any one part of the meal. With a glut of amazing eateries in Victoria Street, I won’t be returning and instead keep looking for that authentic Vietnamese dining experience. Notes: wheelchair accessible but toilets not wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Parking can be a challenge but with patience you’ll find something. Staff were ambivalent about us being there and more interested in...

I have been coming to this restaurant for at least 20 years, introducubg many people. Food has always been excellent and great value for money. The service has always been great until this evening. Tonight it was down right dissapointing.!!! I think we may have been invisible, as the waitress ignored us until we asked for water and glasses for our wine, usually brought to you straight away along with complimentary tea, for us no tea... We wsited and waited for a menu while others arrived at least half an hour after we did and we showered with attention. Their meals came before ours.. When we had finished the soup and entree( which arrived at the same time) the dirty plates were just left , waitress walking past many times and ignoring them, we still waited and waited for our next course, while others came ate and left. We finally spoke to the ownerand complained about the lack of service , mentioning how long I had been coming to the restaurant. He told me not to get upset or it would spoil my meal.... Finally we had the rest of our meal served by an alternate waiter, who I might add had been at the establishment as long as I have been going... At the end my friend went to pay the bill and reiterated to the owner our concerns. He apologised, but did not offer any form of compensation , which I feel would have been the right thing to do under the circumstances.. Sadly dissapointed in my all time favourite...

Only came here for two dishes, and one absolutely impressed me while the other was still solid. When a menu’s extensive it can be hit-or-miss, but I’d heard the Rock Salt Chicken and Salt & Pepper Ribs were the hot hits. The Rock Salt Chicken was cooked pretty much perfectly — any juicier and you’d risk it being under. Portion size was huge for under $20 (think $18 with a solid stack of rice and a salty soup on the side to refresh the palate). The rock salt dip was hella salty, but good — mixing in chilli tames it nicely. Definitely a standout dish. The Salt & Pepper Ribs were exactly as expected. Nothing mind-blowing, but cooked right. Personally would’ve liked them a bit crispier or meatier, but they’re ribs so understandable. Overall, I’d 100% come back for the Rock Salt Chicken alone — excellent value and a big protein hit. • Rock Salt Chicken – 5★ • Salt & Pepper Ribs – 3.5★

We haven’t been to Vinh Ky for a long time. Decided to drop by for dinner after watching a game. The crowd were not there after 8.30pm when we arrived. It was full when we tried to book a table earlier. We ordered XO prawn, black pepper beef, rock salt chicken and a mixed vegetables. The dishes were big and the table can hardly accommodate all the dishes. The XO sauce doesn’t taste like XO sauce, more like oyster sauce with some chili sauce. It was a let down. The rock salt chicken was ok but the sand ginger dipping sauce was way too salty. I prefer to eat it without the sauce. The black pepper beef was tender. It came with broccoli and I felt the black pepper was over powered. The mixed vegetables was soggy and tasteless. The meal is definitely not the most tasty and Vinh Ky is used to be the nice restaurant I have remembered. Perhaps the chef has changed after all the years.
