For a Chinese restaurant, Old Kingdom doesn’t seem to want Chinese patrons. Their menu is all English, except for the first page about the Peking duck course. 🚩 Although English is the default, speaking Chinese at a Chinese restaurant can be easier sometimes. We originally tried to speak Cantonese but they gave us a confused look as though we were aliens. Turns out their whole staff communicate to each other in fluent Cantonese.
This place was recommended to us by a few friends. We have a favourite Peking duck place that we refuse to let go of! It was an IKEA shopping night and Old Kingdom happened to be open when we drove by.
Honestly, the food was ok if not for the service.
Cash only. Don’t forget your $.
Ordered: • Peking duck set (full duck with pancakes, stir fryduck and bean shoots, duck soup) $70.00 • + $8.00 to add a serving of noodles to the stir fry
Duck was ok. It’s not quite the traditional kind but enjoyable. Crispy skin and juicy meat. Happy we added the noodles and was surprised it was crispy noodles (LOVE!). Soup was duck and preserved vegetable. That was ok.
Price: Standard
Service: Felt like we were unwelcome. From the seating, waiting for the menus and taking our order. Understandably we came at a late time (an hour before their advertised time) but they could have easily told us they were closed. There was another table that came in after us so 🤷🏻♀️
Venue: Clean restaurant. Decent air conditioning. Bathroom was dated but clean.
Was I full? Content. Dad went home and made two packs of 2-min noodles. Would recommend ordering an extra serving of noodles or an extra dish if you have 3 or...
Read moreI will be completely honest here. The quality of the food is good. The customer service is average. But, the business ethics in Old Kingdom Richmond is appalling.
Firstly, the restaurant deliberately gave us pancake and sauce (for the duck) that equals a quantity far below what is necessary to eat a duck with. We believe this is done so that customers will have to order more refills.
Secondly, usually in Chinese restaurants if you want to, say, refill your rice, the staff will let you know that it will cost you an extra $2. Not only were we not alerted of refill charges, but the price for refilling pancakes was $8.30 and $3.80 for the sauce. This pricing is ridiculous and I can promise you that this is not normal.
Thirdly, the side dishes we were served also had minimal quantity. For a shared dish, it was barely enough for a single person to eat. By the end of the night, our total cost was $70 and we ended up getting some fast food afterwards because the amount that we were served at Old Kingdom was so bare.
Maybe our negative experience was just an isolated incident. But it is nevertheless a very disappointing one because what my experience showed me was that Old Kingdom Richmond sees customers as nothing more than cash cows. They deliberately give you less so that you are prompted to order more for an unreasonable price.
To the owners of Old Kingdom Richmond, if my benefit of the doubt for your restaurant is false, then I am respectfully asking you to reconsider your morals. Morality should always take precedence before profit. Your customer's well being and satisfaction should always be your...
