This was about my fifth visit to The Post Office Cafe in Moss Vale. Perhaps I should have said something before, however this time I just had to report on this venue. Apart from the venue being a great re use of a heritage building, the experience my wife and I had last weekend was extraordinarily good. We just felt like a light lunch on a cold Southern Highlands afternoon. Fortunately as walk ins we had no difficulty getting a table. I usually do not like tables being too close as I have a thing about privacy for my conversations. Curiously while the table were relatively close to each other, the acoustics were such that I could not hear anything said by our neighbours. My wife (the prawn lover) could not resist the prawn pasta with chilli (on the side at her request) and red onions with obligatory cheese and I think some zucchini. My choice was the pumpkin and sweet potato soup with a slice of nice toasted sourdough bread. Such a soup can be bland but not here. I was in soupy happiness. The flavours were ideal for both dishes and the most important the seasoning was perfect. Someone in the kitchen as a great sense of taste. That is where many restaurants fail. Likewise the garden salad had just the right amount of oil based dressing to leave the veges to speak for themselves. Finally, I had to deal with my macchiato obsession. The macchiato was good but not excellent. I note I am fussy on this score. I am so glad we made a spur of the moment decision to revisit The Post Office Cafe. Having been reminded of the excellence of the food I will be back.

Inside of a building of heritage the food was great. The potato chips were the real deal with visible skin but cooked so well. The mushroom croquettes I was always going to be a fan of but they were better than I expected with serious crunch and not too oily with just enough parmesan but delivered with more optional sauce than I needed. Fish and chips were great with a chunky tartare and the beef burger was stacked so high it really did need the skewer through it. The cheese was overflowing and the beetroot reminded of of the milk bar Barger days but this was way better. Coffee was what I needed! ☕ The atmosphere was great with a good view over the trains and train station and lines outside but high ceilings on the inside if it were raining. Toilet was clean.

Most remarkable breakfast place we have found since we arrived in Australia half year ago. The atmosphere alone makes a visit noteworthy. Add to it the very good coffee, excellent pancakes, the avocado smash that was to die for. And finally the service that was like no other we have seen in Australia so far. We felt that the lady serving us knew all her regular guests by name, had meaningful conversations and gave us a welcome as if we were at home. Will certainly return when we are in the highlands again. Update: We returned, this time on a road trip with our dog and had a nice lunch and the same friendly service - and competent ignoring of our reactive dog. Also had the first Australian pie that I actually enjoyed. Thanks so much!

*edited. Actually, I did not hang up on you in the first phone call. All you said was ‘we won’t have lunch until about 1. I said ‘no thanks and hung up’. After checking your website I rang back to question why lunch had been moved to 1pm, because the website says 12, and then you became extremely rude. You didn’t bother to explain the situation, you just said ‘you were busy. You never apologised and you yelled at me. Generally a standard respon to a customer when you can’t fulfill their request is ‘I’m sorry, we can’t do that right now because (insert reason). Can I offer you something else, or please call back later and we can help you. You were unhelpful, dismissive and rude. We made an effort to support the cafe during Covid, and now I kind of wish we hadn’t bothered.

We live in town and go here pretty regularly. I called to order some take away lunch at 12, which I do at least once a week, and the man who answered the phone was incredibly rude. He told me they weren’t doing lunch until 1pm, when the website says 12. When I questioned this he said ‘why should we make lunch for you when we have people waiting for breakfast, don’t you know how a kitchen works?’ Having worked in hospo for years, myself, I would never have spoken to a customer like this. We won’t be going back here for a while, if the staff are going to...

A beautifully designed cafe and great location for when we visited for a wedding this past weekend.

I had their chicken truffle mushroom pie and eggs Benedict with hollandaise and portobello mushroom on two separate visits during our trip and unfortunately wasn’t too impressed with the taste of each. The pie had a lovely, flakey crust, but I think I was expecting a creamier interior. Instead, it felt more like a casserole dish with pastry over the top. The textures just personally didn’t match for me, but this may work for others. As for the eggs Benedict, my poached eggs were cooked beautifully but had already popped upon arrival, which doesn’t necessarily make it bad. The only complaint I really had about this was that the hollandaise seemed to lack salt or lemon. I could just barely distinguish the flavour with all of the other flavours going on with the spinach, mushrooms and potato rosti being so strong. These flavours just didn’t quite blend for me.

I will say that my husband RAVED about the big breakfast and I would be interested in trying this next time if we visited Moss Vale again.

My coffee was also slightly off the first time, but improved the next visit. However, I was so impressed with the quick and lovely customer service. This made the experience quite welcoming and inviting despite the...
