I'm really not sure how this place got its "Voted Best Fish & Chips in NSW" bragging rights from! We ordered a "Blue Water" platter for two and the only reasons I gave them 2 stars was because the serving was large, steaming hot and it's a beautiful setting (which is nothing to do with them anyway) Sadly, this food was barely edible and when seagulls aren't interested in the (large amount) of leftovers, there's got to be something wrong! There was nothing "fresh" about any of it! It may have been re-cooked to give the appearance of "fresh-cooked" but honestly? It was gross. The "calamari" were rings of over-cooked, tasteless rubber. All hint of the sea had long since departed. The "scallops"...one of my favourite seafood items...were not even identifiable as food. I actually spat mine out on the rocks. Hope the crabs don't die. The prawns. Oh my word. I have never seen such ill-treated pieces of questionable food in my life. Sorry guys, but there should be laws against cruelty to seafood. Ugh! I love prawns but these did not deserve to be treated like this. Dry. Overcooked. Tasteless. Crumbed cardboard. Definitely NOT prawns. And now we get to the fish, which should be the shining star of a decent seafood platter. OK. It may once have swum in the ocean. It smelled like it did. A long time ago. A VERY long time ago. And this "fish" had a Very Hard Life before it ended up ignominiously battered to death at Bubs. The poor thing...we felt so sorry for it. Fish should fall apart into soft, glistening flakes of fishy goodness each with its heart-stopping blanket of golden crunch. This was plain disgusting. As I said...we couldn't even interest the seagulls. Normally the two of us would polish off a platter of good - even halfway decent - seafood. And lick the last bits of salty yum from the paper, if for no other reason than we paid A LOT of money for this travesty. Did I mention the Chips? They were ok. Just ok. Generous serving. Hot. Salty. Soggy... I don't usually leave deliberately bad reviews cos everyone deserves a chance and has an occasional bad day. But the quality, coupled with the outstanding price of this stuff was unacceptable. You want fish and chips? Go anywhere else in Port Stephens where food...
Read moreDue to the location on the water and close proximity to commercial fishing you would expect to experience amazing quality in fish but this is purely an over priced tourist trap.
Iv had a lot of fish and chips growing up in a small coastal town and this was by far not the best in contrast. For just under $50 we got the left and right fillets of 2 fish and a 2 handful of chips (most of which were only an inch in length and soaked in oil) with a $2.50 tub of sauce. The fish served is Basa, a species of catfish. The fish tasted awful, it was fresh in texture with flaking chunks but horrible in taste. We Gave the fish to our cat and not even he ate it.
There are no eftpos facilities even in 2019. The customer service was rushed and the ladies preparing the food were discussing smoking cigarettes amongst each other as they worked. Awesome! ...
In my local area $13 would get you a fillet of barramundi and a side of chips with a coke, and these guys would pick this up from the Sydney fishmongers fresh each day. The family meal is the same but with more chips and 4 barramundi fillets, 4 potatoes scallops/cakes and a 1.25ltr drink and for $40.
Special mention to what I think is one of the best fish and chip shops with exemplary customer service and food.
Poseidon's Catch @ shop 6/225 Burns Bay Rd, Lane Cove NSW 2066, Australia. Not my local but very very memorable experience. I would be happy to pay them any amount they want as the food and service goes...
Read moreI always try to support local business and give good reviews everytime I'm happy about it but this time is probably the first time I give a bad review like this.
We came in as a party of 3 ordering the Blue Water platter and the Fishermen basket (serve 1). The price was expensive but it would have been acceptable if the quality were good.
Firstly they charged for the sauce separately which to me is kind of a ripped off because charging people for $60 per platter surely have room for at least one included sauce.
The quality of the platter was no where to hold up their claim as the best Fish & Chip shop in NSW (not sure if voted or won)
The prawns were not fresh. The squid and calamari rings were so so. The chips were soggy. Salad wasn't that great. Battered fish was bland. Octopus was overcooked and too tough. I guess the only ok thing is the 4 oysters which required no cooking.
This is the sort of thing we can find in the pub not a coastal town and certainly not the best Fish n Chip shop in NSW.
I certainly had better seafood mix in an average Joe seafood shop in Sydney (Rhodes) so my expectations were much higher this time.
I hope the quality of food can be improved to justify the extravagant price tag (for a...
