Some venues are simply blessed with natural appeal. This is one such venue, looking over one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches. Sadly, such fortunately located venues can become complacent in service as a result. They don’t need to try. We visited the club in time to watch the live televised qualifying of the Japanese F1 at 4pm. Given the venue has 12 TV screens scattered throughout (excluding gaming), we expected at least one may be tuned to the largest sport on the planet. After all, 450,000 people had attended the Melbourne F1 only 2 weeks earlier. So I ask the staff if it was possible to have one of the 12 (yes, 12, some literally side by side showing the same event) TV’s changed from AFL or NRL, to watch two Aussies battle it out in F1 qualifying, but this seemed too hard “We’ll get yelled at” was the initial response (shows a lot of respect for their patrons). After pointing out no one was watching the TV adjacent our seat with the Fremantle / Carlton 2nd qtr underway, I was told by the unenthusiastic staff member “We”ll monitor this”. Confident the obvious situation would become clear to a reasonable person, we ordered some drinks and endured the closing of the Fremantle / Carlton game 2nd qtr no one else was watching. With live F1 Qualifying now underway, you can appreciate the frustration of sitting there watching 30mins of ads during AFL half time….. We again renewed our request if 1 of 12 TV’s could be changed to a live event currently underway involving 2 Aussies. The staff member snapped back “No, I saw a family watching it”. This was complete rubbish, and demonstrated nothing but disrespect and laziness. The only family (excluding us) even remotely close to seeing the TV were sitting under it, with all adults having their backs to the wall with the TV so they could see the room, and their kids facing the TV where on iPads and colouring books. It was a complete lie by a staff member too lazy to do anything. I have no tolerance for lazy people who lie, hence this review. We packed up, and left for dinner elsewhere. Tomorrow, during the F1 Race live at 3pm, we will be eating and drinking at another venue. Point to note here, 2 years ago we made the same request for a live F1 race at this same venue which was granted by a staff member. Within 10 minutes there was a crowd around the only screen in the venue showing this. For those ignorant of the sport, 450,000 people attended the Melbourne F1, 934,000 Australians tuned in, and over a billion watched it televised globally. I’m still waiting on the attendance for the Fremantle Carlton AFL game, but I doubt it’s anywhere close to these numbers. And, there were 11 other screens in the venue you could have watched it on. Lovely view, exceptional location, sadly didn’t make it to the food because an individual staff member was too rude, too lazy, and too ignorant. Great place if you...
Read moreRude staff, stay away if you have kids! Intended to go for lunch with my sister at the surf club as we have plenty of times before. However instead I was rudely greeted by Tony at the door. As we entered the surf club rather than communicating with us he merely held his hand up. Since I have been to the surf club before I assumed he wanted to see my ID which I provided. He then just pointed at my 16 year old sister. I advised that she does not have ID as she is 16 and is in my care (I am 25 and her legal guardian). He then proceeded to say "no" without even looking at my ID. Clearly this is a man who does not know how to communicate in a respectful way. I enquired as to why and he informed me that she has to be with a parent. However I pointed out the sign that said under 18s can be accompanied by parent or guardian. Following on from this I can honestly say I have never been spoken to in such a rude, demeaning, and aggressive way. He knew he could not argue with the sign so demanded I show him evidence that she is in my care. If I am honest if he would have politely declined us entry I would have happily gone elsewhere. However he rudely questioned my ability to care for her by saying that I am not responsible if I do not carry the legal papers around with me. Why would I bring legal documents to the beach? I have cared for my sister for a long time, I know the legality of the situation and I have never had any such issues before trying to simply go for lunch. As I was making a valid point about what the sign said and that my ID shows I am 25, he had to resort to standing over me and raising his voice. Very sad that a man of his age has to resort to trying to intimidate a young woman and her teenage sister. When I asked for his name to put in a complaint he smirked and held his name badge out and said "gladly". Clearly he treats people like this regularly and knows there will be no repercussions. As I say I would have happily been turned away if he would have said it politely as there are plenty of better lunch spots along Hasting Street where we would have been welcomed. I did think this was a family friendly place but after being treated this way I would advise anyone with children...
Read moreI hardly know where to begin, other than to say I left this venue wondering how on earth it is still operating. After spending a full hour just trying to find parking, I had hoped the experience inside might redeem the effort. Unfortunately, it only went downhill from there.
The atmosphere was flatter than day-old soda staff looked as though they’d rather be anywhere else, offering service that was at best indifferent and at worst dismissive. The food? If you could even call it that. Within five minutes of ordering, our two chicken parmigianas magically appeared on the table suspiciously fast. Unsurprisingly, they were lukewarm, soggy, and carried that unmistakable “pre-cooked hours ago and reheated” flavour. I couldn’t decide if I was more disappointed by the texture or by the lingering stale taste.
The oysters Kilpatrick were another low point. Watery, tasteless, and with loose shell fragments scattered throughout, they felt less like a delicacy and more like a careless afterthought from the kitchen.
Drinks were equally uninspired. Tap beer was tap beer nothing more to say. I asked for a vodka, Coke, and raspberry, only to be handed a vodka raspberry instead. Attempting to politely correct the bartender was futile, as he seemed determined to pretend I wasn’t there. His espresso martini, while prepared at record-breaking speed, was delivered with such a lack of grace that I was left awkwardly standing at the bar waiting for acknowledgment. And the drink itself? An aggressively strong, completely unbalanced concoction that went straight to the “undrinkable” category.
If there was a single redeeming quality, it was the view but even that felt wasted on a venue so entirely devoid of charm, effort, or quality. In short, you’re better off coming here to look out the window than to expect anything enjoyable on the plate or...
