We were regulars @ the Bakehouse prior to Covid. It was a favourite for breakfast. The service was friendly & efficient. The food of good quality, & reasonably priced. We were therefore surprised that with the end of Covid restrictions, breakfasts as we knew them, were no longer available. Very disappointing. No matter. There were other places available to us. We wanted to continue to support the Bakehouse, but are finding it increasingly difficult. Our problem is that whenever we buy a lunch roll/bun, the price varies, even though the fillings are the same each time. Last Friday we bought two schnitzel buns, an apple pastry. & a plain coffee scroll. The cost was an eye watering $44.30 There is a very limited pricing board, displayed, so difficult to work out the likely cost of your purchases. A more comprehensive price list would help customers decide whether the purchase is of good value. The food is still of good quality, but overpriced. There is a large choice of rolls, buns, etc, as well as cakes. & pastries. Bread can also be purchased. The staff are efficient, but there's something lacking. There are tables both on the footpath, & around back, as well as inside. Entry has a couple of steps to navigate. The parking is limited free parking on the street, although there are car parks within...
Read moreLined up with other strip shops, high on the main street is the Portarlington bakehouse. Its double fronted feature is a beacon to one with an appetite. It would be the dominant business with a bayview, street side seating, indoor seating and a quirky backyard space with more seating. There is quite a range of baked items, pies, sausage rolls, focaccias etc. After a long walk in the district this punter took on a trad long black and a vanilla slice. All up $8.90. The coffee was good, the service was good. The slice, a generous portion was delivered to my table with a knife and fork. Unusual I thought. I am not a pink icing man, and so it was with a deft hand that I peeled back the sticky layer like carpet from a pub floor. The choppers went in. Custard went out. Oh dear ! No biscuit crunch in this slice. The knife and fork became the fighting tools of choice to clean up this delicatible feast. The custard was good but would have shone between a better vehicle of pastry. Fortunately the mens were close by so that I could clean myself up for the public. ⅖. I would try some other...
Read moreEdit: 2024 Check your receipt! Charged more than the amount requested and only noticed because it popped up on my phone. Advertised price and requested price of $6 for a coffee different to what charged, $6.65. When I questioned it I was told "Oh sometimes the till doesn't show the right price but that's a Sunday surcharge".
Absolutely not good enough. You clearly haven't ensured your system is working correctly and are happy to sneakily overcharge your customers. Given how tough times are this is a low move. I won't be returning. (Long time customer).
Also you should have owned up to the mistake, refunded and provided the coffee as a goodwill gesture. Instead you lost a customer and now have a bad review. 🤔
Edit: coffee is hit and miss based on which of the staff make it which is disappointing. Changed review from 5 to 4.
Great coffee and reasonably priced, especially considering seaside location. Amazing selection of savoury and sweet options and honestly the best sausage rolls you could imagine.
Ok top of all this the staff...
