Was very disappointed to get a “black Forrest” cake that wasn’t black. Personally I’ve never heard of anyone making a Black Forrest vanilla flavoured. There was not one bit of chocolate inside the cake, as you can see from the photos it’s just a vanilla cake with cherries and chocolate flakes on the outside, not a “rich chocolate flavour” as you quoted. This makes it very sweet, too sweet in fact which is probably why usually it’s supposed to be a chocolate sponge to counteract the sweetness of the cherry syrup. Not to mention the syrup made the sponge very wet so by the next day when we cut into it the sponge was quite soggy. Also I’ve never heard of a bakery completely changing cakes by default just in case someone might have an allergy, usually those with allergies would specify they need it changed?! But also why wouldn’t you say this when a customer orders a custom cake? That is so weird. That’s a big change to make considering black Forrest literally is a type of chocolate cake. Not impressed. We could not return on the day (April 30) as he ordered it the day before my birthday, I didn’t realise I was supposed to cut into it to check it was correct the day before my birthday!! We did this as we didn’t have transport the following day (May 1) and therefore was not able to get a replacement cake as we couldn’t get to you. This wasn’t mentioned to hubby when he ordered it or picked the cake up so that’s a bit unfair. We ended up eating it as I didn’t have any other birthday cake and couldn’t pick up another one. A bit sad for a 30th birthday surprise.

Ann Bakery in Toowoomba is a true gem! The diverse menu offers a tempting selection that includes everything from savory pies and sausage rolls to fresh rice paper rolls and banh mi. You can also indulge in sweet treats like macarons, fruit salad, and a variety of beverages including coffee, tea, juices, and coffee beans. Of course, they also provide all the bakery staples like pastries, bread rolls, and loaves. The bakery features a spacious layout and an impressive array of options that might feel overwhelming at first, as you will be spoiled for choice. Once you’ve gathered an armful of delicious goodies, make sure to check out the central counter where you can finalize your selections.

This outlet has been around roughly the amount of time we've lived nearby. The Vietnamese overtone is noticeably present - Vietnam used to be a French colony and fortunately they've never forgotten that influence - the baked goods are superb. Pastries are light and flaky, and these folks have a good range of desserts as well. Recently they also offer Vietnamese dishes such as Phở, BĂșn bĂČ Huáșż and BĂĄnh mĂŹ. On that note, this is one of the few places that I can source the correct baguette for BĂĄnh mĂŹ when I make my own. That said, their pies and sausage rolls are the standouts for me. They're always consistent and a recent revisit after some time has reinforced my view.

On Wednesday, I went and ordered a Blackforest cake for my wife’s 30th birthday.

After paying my $45 and picking up a couple hours later we cut into it the next day and realised it wasn’t a Blackforest cake at all. It was a vanilla cake covered in white icing with 10 cherries and some shaved chocolate pieces. When I rang the bakery the day after my wife’s birthday, the manager was very difficult to understand, but she said something about the fact that I would have to specify that I wanted chocolate inside the cake and that The reason they default to a vanilla cake, unless you ask specifically for chocolate is due to food allergies

The only other part of the call I could actually discern was that they basically said it was “an accident, but it wasn’t their fault “which doesn’t make sense as they said earlier in the call that they deliberately chose a vanilla flavoured cake, despite Blackforest being chocolate

As compensation I was only offered a $10 voucher which is disgusting considering I paid $45. If they couldn’t do a Blackforest cake they should have said so and if I had to specify specifically that I want to chocolate inside the cake they should have asked.

I will never order a cake from these guys again do not trust them with...
