My wife and I had the pleasure to dine at the backyard restaurant if not for breakfast it was for dinner on our recent holiday in Cairns.

Let’s talk about breakfast : A full buffet breakfast is offered at the Shangri-La Cairns and it is exceptional. Plenty of choices with hot dishes rotated daily to give customers a bit of variety.

Let’s talk about the food. Fantastic version of Bircher muesli and Chia but also a huge selection of salads, smoked salmon and a massive choice of hot dishes and pastries.

The Eggs station managed by two different chefs on a daily basis was fantastic. My eggs Benedict was amongst the best I’ve ever had at any hotel and the omelette was also just perfect. Actually I became quite friendly with both chefs but on one occasion when I said good morning I frightened the poor chef and he dropped an egg. We both laughed and he goes “you know Jeff Eggs don’t bounce “ to which I answered “wouldn’t be awesome if you invented an egg that does”.

The staff at breakfast are all friendly but a special mention is of one of the wonderful hosts who always looked after my wife and myself and her name was Jailyne.

In regards to dinners, we had dinner twice at the backyard Restaurant. The theme seems to be an Asian Australian style menu. On one occasion chef Darren and I had a good chat but it was the staff who made the experience all the better and on one night we had surf and turf which was steak and grilled prawns with no garlic or onion and my wife had barramundi and salad and a side serving Of fries.

We came back after a full day in the Daintree rainforest and we were starving and I ordered the barramundi with mashed potatoes and my wife had Pad Thai. Both dishes came out hot and freshly cooked and very tasty. On this night after touring all day we were very well looked after by the Restaurant manager Horaz and a server called Val.

Excellent staff make the dining experience exceptional!!

Thanks Shang Rila … you made our stay very special!

after waiting for the refurbishment of Eight Bar, m pleasantly surprised with the opening and completion of The Backyard at Shangrila Cairns, staff could not be more helpful and polite, with genuine smiles and a relaxed atmosphere. Admit the almond latte I just had is possibly one of the best have had for quite some time. Though I did not eat any of the meals, all the food I saw and smelt looked great, with comments from other customers confirming they tasted as good as they looked.

The staff went out of their way to assist me when my car battery was flat, knowing I was not going to order anything, made no difference to their service and also ensuring my water jugged was topped up with refreshing watermelon water.

seating is a mixture, you decide if you want to sit in a cafe type arrangement (the leather retro chairs are not as comfy as the bamboo two seaters though handy to a power point). Bar stools and bar tables, table and chairs, the choice is yours and depends on your mood, company. you also have the choice of water views, parkviews, beer garden. Lighting has also been designed to represent the good old Aussie backyard and shed.

Thoroughly recommend you pop in, enjoy a coffee, refreshing beverage, and of...

Had a wonderful dinner at the Backyard Cairns. The food was great and a very good price. ☺️ The service was good, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We got some cocktails which were amazing 🍸 I was jealous of the coffee type my partner grabbed, I wish I had actually had that every morning. When we could not decide on a wine our server brought over tasters of two different wines to help us choose! 😌 We shared for a starter the kingfish shashimi, what I really liked was how you could mix different combinations of the food on the plate to have a different taste each time. A wonderful experience even if it was over the top with the garnish. For mains we shared the chef specials which were a 600g sirloin on the bone steak with potatoes and onions with a jus gravy, and the bug with coconut rice and a creamy curry sauce. The bug stole the show and was so good everything enhanced the bug to make it so melt in your mouth delicious. 🤤 The steak was also cooked to perfection, the chefs knew what they were doing! 🤌 There was a slight hiccup when they could not find our reservation, but they still found us a table in...

I rarely write bad reviews but my experience at the buffet breakfast last Sunday was one I will never repeat. For my last morning in Cairns I went for the buffet breakfast after reading all the wonderful reviews. I was tight for time and chose a buffet over ala carte for convenience. Sadly it felt disorganised and poorly managed. The line at the egg station was long (wait time almost 30 minutes) with only one poor chef trying to keep up. The waffles and other popular items had run out so you had to wait. I assembled my fruit plate and juice, put my cutlery wrapped in a napkin next to my food to go and get an omelette. After patiently waiting for nearly half an hour, I returned to my table to find my food had been cleared. So back to the crowded food area to assemble my plate again and make toast. They really need to put on more staff at the egg station, offer diners a way to indicate that they are still dining, train serving staff and limit the number of diners to match their capacity. Such an amazing view and decent spread but poorly managed at peak times.
