Went there again yesterday around 10am for a coffee and a snack. As I was served a stale Croissant a couple of weeks earlier I decided to ask if the pastries were fresh and was told they were yesterday's, but would be great after they get heated up.
Come on guys, who sells stale pastries at 10 am in the morning for full price?
I ended up ordering the fresh savoury muffin instead, with spinach and feta supposedly. First it did not turn up for a good 10 minutes, even though it was not particularly busy. Whilst fresh, I could seriously not taste much other than the baking soda. I searched for the elusive feta, but could not see or taste any. Consistency was rather bland and stodgy and I needed sips of coffee to get it down the hatch.
The place looks to be run mainly by staff on junior wages for the front of house service and it's showing. Acoustics were awful with tinny music blaring from the stereo, we actually asked if it could get turned down a bit, because it was hard to have a conversation across the table.
So why do I keep going back? It's a cool place with what is a great ambience at times, especially if one is lucky enough to sit outside. We also like the coffee.
We all love the decor , but it's not really enough to make up for bad food and service. Looking at previous reviews it appears that we are not the only ones with complaints, try sorting them low to high, and there are a number of them over a period. The one star I gave is for the coffee and decor, otherwise it...
Read moreI’ve been frequenting Ootong since 2013. I’ve seen its phases unfold before my very eyes like watching a puppy grow into an elder dog. Can I just say that the coffee has gone so downhill. I don’t consider myself a coffee snob, I’ll skull a Blend 43 with tap water here and there, but I just cannot ignore the apathy that’s happening here at the moment. I will wander down the road most mornings for an iced mocha to enjoy on my porch. Lately the iced coffees have been bitter and comprised of mostly milk, it seems like any sort of passion for coffee making has been flung out the window and the people there take 10 minutes to fill a cup with milk and smatter some essence of coffee atop. It’s disheartening because iced beverages are the one treat I still allow myself in these times of dire economic circumstances and now I feel like I might just stick to my Blend 43 in the mornings. Is nothing sacred? Will we ever see the light again? All I’m after is an iced beverage with flavour profile of the two main components- coffee and chocolate -but it seems that milk is the only thing left on the menu. If I wanted a cup of milk I’d go to the shop, spend a price gouged amount on a carton of milk, come home, fill a cup with my weird smelling ice (I need to clean my freezer) and fill the pint glass with cow’s milk. I’d do that. It’s...
Read moreThe cafe is operating on new hours due to COVID-19 and closes at 3pm everyday with juice station closing up at 2:30 - I wanted to get a green smoothie for the toddler but missed out by a few mins... boohoo... opted for a babyccino instead but sadly it was mostly just froth with a tiny bit of milk served with cocoa powder on top and a marshmallow on the side. Small flat white was mediocre, rather strong and bitter for my liking. The interior has character with a cozy feel but rather dim that you need to stop at the entrance for your pupils to adjust to see. Outdoor seating is great with both sunny and shady options, but the old wooden chairs have chipped edges - pulled on my stocking and would've given me a run had it not been a...
