Oh dear The place and menu looked lovely and we took a $33 cab there. Red flags were flying from the get go. Wine list was out of date due to wine supplier change. Three different members of waiting staff kept coming to us unaware of one another. The one we ordered from knew absolutely nothing about what was on the menu Whilst eating our starters (with ‘sourdough’ bread which wasn’t sourdough), another of them arrived with the side dishes we’d ordered for with the mains Then another was hovering around with our mains while we were still eating our starter Starter plates were instantly replaced with our mains and the now stone cold side dishes. THE MAINS horror. This was old old reheated food. Maybe leftover from one or two days before. Like plated meals that had been sat in an oven two or three times. And I mean dry old meat, dry lukewarm potatoes on one plate and on another re-heated vegetables that were too tough to cut through. The pumpkin ‘puree’ had all but disappeared into the fat from the duck that had sat upon it during that time. To knowingly send that out from a kitchen and to put it down in front of people paying $35-$45 for it is disgustingly disrespectful. It’s treating your customers like dicks. We sent the food back and cancelled the order full stop. Why would we now want their food? They expected us to pay for those mains with a 10% discount!! We just paid for our starters which we had eaten, and left. Never go there. It’s clearly style over content, all fur coat and no knickers and can’t possibly be run by restaurateurs. It surely is just run by someone looking to make a quick buck. I repeat,...
Read moreI hate to give 3 stars but our experience was the case. Don't go on a theatre night even if you give yourself 1.5 hrs.
We ordered a couple of simple entrees, our oysters the ice had all melted to water so they were hard to get out of the bowl without getting water everywhere & then after we sat waiting with no offer of more drinks and no food for 50 minutes. We ended up getting our mains 10 minutes before we needed to leave & had to rush them which was unfortunate.
The staff were friendly but on theatre nights it's too busy so puts alot of pressure on them and the kitchen, 50 minutes between courses was a huge wait. The mains were nice but because we rushed them we may as well not have bothered, we did ask to cancel when we realised how little time we had left but they were ready at that stage.
I would definitely give them another shot on a non theatre night as the reviews on here are fantastic and the staff are very friendly it just obviously wasn't our night.
Edit to reply: thank you for your reply, we did advise the staff on arrival we were off to the theatre and checked we would have enough time, and needed to leave by 7.15 we were told it was more than enough time but unfortunately we didn't get our mains til 7pm after following up a few times, unfortunately they had to be rushed for our departure at 7.15pm the staff were friendly it was just busy and couldn't be helped it just was a stressful wait knowing we'd...
Read moreWhat can I say, this was one of the best overall experiences I've had. Unfortunately I arrived 15mins late, but despite that, I was still able to be seated outside despite having a res for the backroom. It did have an elevated sound level in the main room, and the outside seating had road noise and also car noises and exhaust. The street problems are outside of the establishments control, so that shouldn't factor into the excellent service and meals I had the luck in partaking. Started the evening with Prosecco from Veneto, which is wear my family is from and have picked the grapes. Had the Chefs selection, everything was extremely well paired, though a little bit short on extra bread and bread sticks - which was quickly remedied by our server extremely quickly, Luc(k?)as you're the man - great personable service and banter 👍. The pork and fennel meatballs were exceptional, the paring of cheese, ham, dips and olives were all fantastic. The second course was very well timed, arriving shortly after taking time with the first course. Now here is the coup dé grace, the brisket gnocchi is second only to my Nonas, you have to taste it. Unfortunately my love of Italian dishes overshadowed the equally great lighty battered whiting dish. I didn't not have dessert but I was assured the sticky date pudding was excellent as well. So my rating for Bar Amelie is a very solid 9.1, easily the best food and service I've...
