It's all about the spices. Nobody has time to grind and mix a masala of 57 spices when cooking for 2; Bay Leaf will do it for you. Gravy? This isn't gravy. I'd rather pay money for unique flavour combinations that I can't do at home based on recipes handed down than for bulk meat, which I can do at home.
We have been priviledged to have been supplied with tasty treats by Bay Leaf over several years, and they never disappoint. Possibly this is because we order food that isn't Australian Indian (butter chicken, etc.) What we receive is flavour we couldn't recreate without hours of work (if at all). We add our own garden vegetables and a meal ordered in stretches over several days.
Want bulk meat? Get thee to Dirty Bird where you can get a Family Bucket. Yes, your family can guzzle questionable meat from a bucket (what has happened to us, that it is now acceptable to eat meat from a 'Family Bucket')? Or buy a chicken from Coles and slop some Jar Sauce on it - bingo! Indian food tonight. Except it isn't.
Incidentally, I once had a meal on the Subcontinent where I got the head of the chicken, and this meant I was a lucky man (apparently - probably similar to how being crapped on by a bird in flight is 'lucky') Granted, this was a totally different area to where these guys are from, but indicative: one chicken (plus 'gravy' and flat bead and a shed-load of pulses and vegetables) was feeding 40 people, and this was a celabratory occasion, such as happens once a year. Try that at home. But it was delicious, because of the 'gravy'.
If you ask for things how they do them at home, you're in for a treat. If you want butter chicken (mild) and a can of coke, this probably isn't your place. Want subtlety and nuanced flavours? Want to try something different that you couldn't recreate at home? Spice rack all out of green cardamon pods (not the black, that would be wrong), asafoetida and fresh turmeric...
Read moreWent to the Bay Leaf in Palmwoods today as a local wanting to support local business instead of buying my "Friday treat meal" from big takeaway chains. I ordered a large medium lamb korma with a large basmati rice and garlic naan bread. I was impressed firstly with the service, the staff were friendly but told me the wait would be 35mins. To my great delight they gave me my order after not even 15mins. Taste of the curry was authentic, I could taste the spices they put in, very yummy and not overly sweet like I find some Indian places make their curries. I ordered medium but it wasn't hot at all so not sure what happened there. (and I'm not like a hard core chilli girl, I like a little bit, can't deal with anything drastic). Rice was yummy and the naan bread was well made, only feedback I would have for the owners is to use freshly pressed garlic as the garlic tasted like it was out of a jar and I think that really makes a difference to good garlic taste. Overall a great experience and would definitely recommend! Thank you for a...
