Black Star Pastry, a quaint establishment in the heart of Rosebery known for its innovative fusion dishes. This cafe, with its unassuming charm, promised an intriguing dining experience.
Menu Availability: Initial Hiccups The beginning of my visit was somewhat marred by availability issues. Despite an enticing menu, it took three tries to find an available dish. For a cafe of this repute, such discrepancies between the menu and actual availability can be a dampener on the dining experience.
Lamb and Onion Ring Pie: A Culinary High The Lamb and Onion Ring Pie, once ordered, did not disappoint. The pastry was expertly crafted – light, flaky, and the perfect companion to the delicately seared lamb within. The onion rings added a sweet nuance, creating a well-rounded flavor profile that was both hearty and refined.
Custard Flan: The Star Attraction The highlight, however, was the Custard Flan. This dessert struck a perfect balance between its airy, delicate filling and the crisp, flaky crust. It's a testament to the cafe's prowess in pastry-making and a must-try for anyone visiting.
Raspberry Lychee Drink: A Missed Mark The Raspberry Lychee drink, unfortunately, didn't live up to its promise. Dominated by rose water, it eclipsed the subtle flavors of raspberry and lychee, resulting in a somewhat unbalanced beverage.
Ambiance and Service: Comfortable Yet Lacking The cafe's atmosphere struck a nice balance between modernity and comfort. However, the service, while polite, lacked the attentiveness one might expect from such a locale.
Final Verdict: Black Star Pastry in Rosebery offers a mixed bag. Its high points, like the Lamb and Onion Ring Pie and particularly the Custard Flan, showcase the kitchen's capabilities. However, the issues with menu availability and certain flavor imbalances need addressing.
Recommendation: Visit for the pastries, especially the Custard Flan. It's a delightful experience that pastry enthusiasts should not miss. Be prepared for potential limitations in...
Read moreIf you want the Hot Chocolate Mirage (house speciality) make sure you order it. I asked for a hot chocolate and got a basic hot chocolate. It was the end of a shift, but the server was cold and unfriendly. And texting the next person rather than serving. I know you can't be "on" all the time and have things to do, but a simple "I'll be with you in a moment" acknowledgement goes a long way. The other server/barista was smiling as people walked by.
Accessibility note for people with physical pain - they have no standard chairs. Only stools, and bench where you can lean far against the glass, and high stools with backs. If you have back pain and want back support and feet on the floor, there's nothing for you.
I'd prefer to see items labelled. I don't like having to ask "what is this? And this?"
The menu has good variety without being too long. They have 10 cakes, 4 pastries, a tart, brownie, toast, sandwiches, pies and quiches.
They have an interesting variety of drinks, including home made iced tea, hot chocolate mirage (with chai spices) and a strawberry watermelon latte.
Dairy free and vegan options.
Parking is limited to The Cannery parking and street parking. I always have to hunt for a park when visiting other businesses here, and show up 10 mins early in case.
Great vibe, beautiful cakes,...
Read moreHaven't been at the Rosebery BSP for awhile and it was such a pleasant morning brunch. There's new (well, new to us..) fusion food and our favourite was the kimcheese toastie! It's not as spicy as kimchi itself but the cheese combo and the crunchy toasted sourdough was super fantastic! Another pie we thought we would explore is the Japanese curry chicken pie, however this was a bit of a letdown. The curry was nice but the pastry absorbed a lot of the "sauce" so it felt a bit dry. The chicken tasted ok but nothing to write home about. I would imagine a bit more curry sauce contained within the pie would make us want to give it another go. All in all.. interesting. Not a complete no, but could do with improvements. Staff was super friendly as usual, and coffee is always nice there, the atmosphere is relaxing and fam friendly, desserts are always great! The mango yuzu cake is to be commended. The desiccated coconut is hard to weave into a cake without giving a feeling of them being "flaky" or "dry" and often needs extra effort chewing but BSP have somehow wrapped it into the spongy bottom layer of the cake which is brilliance in itself, has a nice coconut aroma and a bit of bite without it being hard and dry. clapclapclap
Thank you again for the...
