"By the way" is almost never a good thing to hear...its never "by the way, you don't have cancer" or "by the way, you won $5mill". In restaurants, you get the variations when you get the menu. When you dine with others, there's usually a process of barter and negotiation in the process to determine what's gunna happen when the waiter returns to enact the preparation of your eats. It's just no fun to reach that end, to be told that what you wanted ain't gunna happen (bub), or "here's something super tempting, so off you hop back to the Hague to recommence negotiations". It's a minor annoyance, made into WW3 here by your unhinged food scout. The service here was otherwise first rate, and the kingfish cervice really good. As for the rest, they reminded me of why it's been years since my previous visits. The meals here are fine. Prepared quite well, though the snapper was as overcooked as Harry stiles adulations. You can enjoy a reliably good meal and service here, in a really lovely setting. The meals are generally bland. Curried veg were not. Cucumber and coconut need the lemon grass written, but underdelivered. The pancake is pretty good, the greens quite interesting, but the cheese has a moderate crumb and blandish flavour profile. I'm being critical here. This IS a lovely place that will leave you well cared for and adequately nourished...for a reasonable price.

3.5 stars. A pretty famous and popular modern Australian restaurant in central Newtown. Staff are very friendly and quite attentive. Decor and furnishings are pretty basic. Food is quite unique with a variety of interesting dishes but will set you back a lot as well. Scallop ceviche Flavour: S+, 8.5/10. The yuzu oil and finger lime aren't very prominent but that's fine because the sesame sambal was really good Texture: SS, 9/10. Soft scallop and slightly crunchy sambal is nice. Maybe a bit too oily Value: C, 5/10. $9 each is really not worth it though Pecan pate Flavour: S, 8/10. Really unique and not overwhelmingly nutty Texture: S, 8/10. Smooth and a bit crunchy. When eaten with the bread, it is a bit thick Value: B, 6/10. $13 Cauliflower & eggplant zaalouk Flavour: S, 8/10. Cauliflower a bit bland but the eggplant and tahini were nicely spiced Texture: A, 7/10. Cauliflower a bit too soft Value: B, 6/10. $23 for about 5 florets Lamb rump Flavour: SS, 9/10. Delicious with nice blend of spices, garlic and tomato Texture: S+, 8.5/10. The slightly charred exterior was really nice but the inside was still a bit rare. Maybe could be slightly more cooled Value: A, 7/10. $38 is not good but dish was very good

One of the best set menus I've tried to date! Highly recommend Bloodwood for modern Australian food in Newtown. Got the Chef's Banquet for $70pp which was amazing - favourites were the focaccia with pecan pate, polenta chips and lamb rump. Flavours were diverse but not too overpowering, really enjoyed the range of seasonings and sauces in the dishes. However, found the desserts to be a major let-down. Pina colada trifle was decent but the vanilla rice pudding was not pleasant, the balsamic roasted grapes were too sour and didn't go well with the rice pudding which wasn't very sweet. Chocolate cake also had an overpowering chocolate flavour. Aside from the desserts, still deserves a 5-star rating because of the other phenomenal dishes on the banquet. Water service was spot on, although food did take a bit long to come out in between courses. Interior is quite dim so best for a cosy but casual, relaxed dining atmosphere.

Bloodwood Restaurant is a tapas type style dining experience in Newtown. The 87% like rate is reflective of the great well cooked and flavoursome food, relaxing atmosphere and customer experience. I suggest at least 2-3 dishes per person. Most of the dishes are $17-$25 so it can add up but worthwhile for that taste of a bit posh.

Every single dish that I ordered was so very tasty. Delicious! The polenta chips with blue cheese gorgonzola sauce ($9) are always good to start with. Little rectangles of perfectly cooked polenta with the naughty sauce.

The Wasabi Fried Chicken ($17) with avocado marscapone was very tasty. It was not spicy at all but just very well cooked chicken that sat on smooth avocado marscapone. I wish there were more pieces! A little bit steep at $17 for three pieces but it was delicious

The seared venison with mustard glaze ($25) was served with green garlic, brussel sprouts and kumera. The flavours were amazing and the Venison was perfectly cooked. Again, if only there were more pieces of venison to devour.

Equally enjoyable was a small butter poached snapper ($24) was served with peas, garlic chives, olive oil and tea crumbs. The pea and olive oil broth really brought out the flavours of the fish.

The special one off that night (which was not on the menu) was the miso scallop ($5) which I devoured in an instant. Dessert was asian dumplings, green tea ice cream with black sesame clusters, mango pieces and coconut shavings. Dessert was great but did not quite match the food that I ordered prior. But that's my fault - I choose the dessert!

Overall, a great experience with fantastic food, relaxing atmosphere sitting outside in their court yard and attentive customer service. A good restaurant for date or intimate catch up.

Prices: $50 or...

Until I recently moved to a new place within short walking distance of King Street, I had no idea that Newtown had much more to offer than Thai food and so discovering great new places like Bloodwood has been a dream.

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Bloodwood in mid-March. My first impression of the place was that it was very small and I wasn't looking forward to sitting on a little stool to eat dinner... Not realising that behind the kitchen and up (and down) the stairs there is a considerable amount of seating! After our 1-hour wait for a table, it was a very pleasant surprise.

This is a restaurant where I would happily wait an hour to visit again. Food is designed to share and there is a great variety of interesting choices, which made it choose only 4.

For our shared entrees had the lamb 'nuggets', which I was sceptical of when we ordered, but turned out to be little lumps of smooshed-together braised lamb with a delicious sauce and jalapeños that just made the dish. We also had a scallop dish which was tasty but to be honest, a little boring. For the mains we had the roasted heirloom vegetables and the beef brisket, both of which for absolutely perfect. I've never enjoyed beetroot more than I did with the brisket dish.

I couldn't pass up the trifle for dessert and I was VERY pleased with my choice. Sweet, rich and boozy - just like my Nanna's receipe but with a modern twist. Decent service and a really interesting building topped the night off perfectly.

I can't wait for an excuse to go back with more friends to show them how fantastic...

I've been to Bloodwood twice, and the latest time was even better than the first. It's a bit of a tapas vibe, so we had 8 dishes for 5 people, which was absolutely perfect for us.

The food came out SO fast. The absolute stars of the night were the Ocean Trout, Prawn Toast, and the Beef Skewer. Absolutely incredible flavours. 10/10 for all three of these dishes.

The two I wouldn't order again were the Duck and the Octopus. Duck was cooked perfectly and had a sour rhubarb sauce. Needed a tiny bit more sweetness to be amazing. The Octopus was a weird one. Not a fan of the flavour combo on there. Very bitter with the charcoal.

The drinks were great. Would recommend the Pommy cocktail to anyone. Their spicy margarita packs a real punch.

The staff were absolutely fantastic, attentive, and the drinks were flowing quickly. Our waitress was so caring and supportive of managing our table's allergies. Took her time explaining the menu in detail to ensure we were comfortable.

There were no peanuts on the menu (perfect for peanut allergies) and use minimal dairy. They also offered vegan alternatives for a lot of food items if that's what you're into.

We finished the night with the rice pudding and the chocolate fudge cake. Both were absolutely lovely. The cake was dense and delectable, and the rice pudding had these AMAZING little balsamic grapes on top.

Overall, an incredible evening. The whole table was so happy with the whole night. We'll be back...
