Cute little Vietnamese restaurant in Newtown, with only vegan options.
We came here as a decently sized group and, because of this, were able to try multiple things on the menu. Before we discuss the food though, the service was a standout. The guy (I think he’s the owner) was very friendly and patient with us, and hugely hospitable.
The food was good! Out of the 12 or so dishes we got, I’d probably recommend 8-10 of them! I didn’t take pictures of all of them but here’s what I thought: seaweed fried rice - very nice; a unique mix of flavours and good textures too! It was crispy without being dry. I think they could have added a bit more veggies, but overall very nice stir fried noodles - we got both the thin yellow noodle (crispy) and the flat noodle. Both were nice and had good flavours. The veggies on top were just steamed, not too complicated, but still nice combination veggies - this is the one dish I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend unless you really love veggies. Just get like there wasn’t anything particularly special in the dish sweet and sour prawn - interesting sweet and sour flavour. I think it’s something to try but I don’t think I’d order it again spicy eggplant in black bean sauce - yum! The dish came with tofu and potatoes. All three parts of the dish, especially the sauce, were delicious. We got two but we probably should have gotten another two. red curry - highly recommend this dish. It had great flavour. I didn’t get to try much cause it was eaten up by the time it reached me tomato rice - we got one of each rice but this one stood out. It was unique and tasty, and went well with the components of the other dishes papaya delight salad - not really a fan. It wasn’t “bad” but there were just so many better options banh xeo pancake - very nice; good texture and filling and the sauce really complimented the dish
Overall, I’d definitely recommend this place. The service was great, they pumped the food out real quick and were friendly and courteous. They even stayed back late because we were running late, which pushed everything back a bit. They’ve got some flavourful food, and a great range to suit most dietary...
Read moreThis place is a gem! We had our scrumptious dinner here almost every day when we were holidaying in Sydney. We were staying in the city but did not mind travelling here to eat the delicious food. All the dishes on the menu are delicious. We tried many items, from appetisers, noodles (soup and stir-fried), hot plate, hot pots and pancakes. All the rolls (summer, autumn, duck and spring) are so fresh and flavourful. The dipping sauces were so savory and tasty. The salt and pepper tofu is also fantastic! The rich broths in the pho (beef and chicken), hue noodles, duck, tom yum were all so uniquely different (some places serve the same broth for every noodle dish). The fried rice is THE BEST! We tried the beet root and seaweed and there is so much 'wok-hey' (wok frangrance). Each grain has a chewy bite to it and that is what makes a plate of fried rice so outstanding! The seasoning is perfect! Not too salty, not too oily. My husband loves the pancake and my teenage daughter eats every dish with 'this is so amazing' ! I would highly recommend this place if you are in Sydney because the boss and staff are so friendly, attentive to our needs and so down-to-earth! We feel so welcome to dine there and the atmosphere is cosy and warm! We are already missing the food there now that we are back home. Will definitely visit this place when we visit...
Read moreTwo ingredients that you hope are in every restaurant and cafe you visit, but two that are seldom found: generosity and love. And today, a lazy Sunday lunch, we had a crispy vegan duck noodle soup and a hokkien mee noodle stir fry with vegan chicken pieces, bok choy, red capsicum, carrots in an oyster light sauce. The soup is fragrant, full, tasty and heartening. The slices of tofu are a treat, as are the pieces of shitaki mushrooms. The eggplant, fried and then served with a crispy salad with red and white cabbage and pickled carrots and daikon, are soft, fleshy and rich. Vina is a small place hidden away, on King. And a lovely place for a fresh lunch.
From my last visit: Dive into a peking duck noodle soup: the soup is full flavoured, sweet and rich. The soy based duck pieces float above a sea of yellow egg noodles, bok choy, many mushrooms, and hidden pieces of sliced tofu. Excellent flavours. Lovely service. Don't be put off by its 'vegan' title. The Banh Xeo is huge with crisp lettuce, pickled carrots and daikon, and fresh mint. Share a bowl with the aromatic Jasmine hot tea. Worth a...
