I recently had the pleasure of dining at Chinese Dumpling Master in Newtown, and I can confidently say this is one of the best dumpling spots I’ve ever visited! From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for something special. The cozy, no-frills atmosphere immediately made me feel at home, and the friendly staff were quick to greet us and get us settled in.
The menu is straightforward but incredibly enticing—focused entirely on dumplings, and it does not disappoint. We started with the pan-fried dumplings, which were absolutely flawless. The crispy, golden-brown bottoms and tender, juicy filling made each bite heavenly. The combination of pork, chives, and a hint of ginger was perfectly balanced, and the dipping sauce that accompanied the dumplings was spot on—a little tangy with a touch of heat, which enhanced the overall flavor.
Next, we tried the steamed dumplings filled with a savory mix of shrimp and pork. These dumplings were delicate and bursting with flavor, with the filling so fresh and succulent that it practically melted in your mouth. The texture of the dumpling skin was just right—soft but sturdy enough to hold the delicious filling without being too thick or doughy. You can tell that they put a lot of care into making each dumpling.
The soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) were another standout. The delicate dough encased a delicious, rich broth along with the tender pork filling. The balance of flavors was amazing, and the soup inside each dumpling was hot, savory, and comforting. They provided spoons and napkins for the inevitable messy (but delicious) enjoyment that comes with these tasty morsels!
We also ordered a side of stir-fried noodles with vegetables, which was a perfect complement to the dumplings. The noodles were cooked perfectly—chewy and satisfying—and the vegetables were crisp and fresh. It wasn’t greasy, which I really appreciated, and the flavors were spot on. A great addition to the meal.
The service was incredibly efficient, and our food arrived quickly, despite the restaurant being busy. The staff were attentive, friendly, and seemed genuinely proud of the food they were serving. We didn’t have to wait long for refills of tea or to ask questions about the menu, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.
As for the prices, they are incredibly reasonable for the quality and portion sizes you receive. You’re definitely getting great value for your money, and I left feeling completely satisfied. If you’re a fan of dumplings or just craving authentic Chinese food, Chinese Dumpling Master is an absolute must-visit.
Overall, this spot truly lives up to its name. Whether you’re a dumpling connoisseur or just looking for a cozy place to enjoy delicious, authentic Chinese comfort food, Chinese Dumpling Master in Newtown is where you want to be. I can’t wait to return and try even more dishes from their menu. Highly recommend this gem to anyone in the area! Five stars...
Read moreAbsolutely disgraceful customer service on multiple occasions. I had been going to this restaurant for a couple years and decided to let go the incidences that had occurred every time until the latest one where I decided I will never go back. I arrived with 2 other friends, after being seated, we ordered 3 main dishes and were told this wasn't enough food and that we should just order takeaway and not waste a (2 seater table) despite there being 3 of us. We wanted to stay so we ordered another 2 dishes, yet this still wasn't good enough and again were told to get takeaway. Being naive and hungry.. we accepted this, waited for our takeaway and ate our dinner at the park. Another time, I ordered their frozen dumplings to pick up and make at home. When I went to pay, the server said I could only pay with cash. I told her I didn't have cash and that I've always paid with card here, and she told me to walk down king st to the ATM (which charges a fee) to withdrawal only $10. After telling her I wouldn't do this, she rolled her eyes increased the price on the card machine by $3 to allow me to use my card. Last time I checked, businesses are not allowed to profit from a surcharge fee. Another time, I came with 3 other friends for dinner. We had nearly finished our food and the server came over asking if we were finished. We said no and she asked again 5 minutes later, we still hadn't finished. She then came over and crudely dumped the bill on our table and walked away. When we finished we walked up to the counter to pay and the eftpos machine was presented to us. The owner had sneakily made the price $10 MORE than what was on the original bill, thinking we would just tap without noticing. When we told her this was not the same price as the bill, she said we had more than one drink so we had to pay for more glasses. As this is a BYO restaurant we understood we had to pay for glasses but not more than one each. When we refused to pay she started to verbally abuse us saying we stayed in her restaurant for too long. I looked around and there were many empty tables.. I told her she cannot treat customers like this and that every time I would come there would be an issue. She replied with "I don't care, then why do you come?". I told her I like to support small businesses and that their food was good, but not worth how you get treated so I will never come back. Appalling, not to mention ILLEGAL customer service. Such a shame as this was one of my favourite Chinese restaurants in newtown/enmore. I suggest going to Chinese noodle house in Haymarket if you'd like similar and BETTER food and don't feel like being...
Read moreAs a frequent diner at this establishment, last night has changed that forever and I will never go back. The service here is one of the worst in Sydney. Last night, my friends and I (group of 3) ordered salt & pepper tofu, a dish I have had before, along with other dishes but when it came out - not one of us could eat it. It was so awfully salty, we could not even swallow it. We advised the waitress that the dish was inedible, politely, and she simply took the plate away and left. We continued eating our other dishes and then 15 minutes later the waitress came back with another plate. After we had finished eating. We advised her that we did not want a replacement dish, thank you but we were done eating. None of us wanted it after tasting the horrible one. As I have gone up to pay, I see the tofu is still on the bill. I advised that we could not eat the dish, and it was returned - please take it off the bill. Very nicely. Then the Manager comes over and says “No. you have to pay for it. We all tried it. It was fine. The chef tried it and there was nothing wrong with it. He ate it. We served it all night. No one else had a problem. Just you. And we made you a new one. You ordered. You pay.” I stated nicely, that we would have declined the new one if that had been communicated. It just put us off. She said “if you don’t like salt & pepper tofu with salt, ask for less salt.” She was so rude and was making such a huge scene, everyone was staring, the chef came out from the kitchen - it was horrifying, I just ended up paying so we could leave. It was never about the money, the dish was $20. There was 3 of us. We all work in the service industry and we were all absolutely shocked at the behaviour. If I could give this place a zero - I would. This is exactly what happened. Ruined the whole mood for the evening. I actually am still very shocked at her behaviour. Save yourself the trouble, go elsewhere. We will never,...
