I have been to a few Teppanyaki places in Sydney and besides it being my latest experience, tonight (4.7.20) at Kyoto is probably my favourite. I went there with my family and we had an awesome time. All the staff were accommodating and patient. There was a bit of effort required by both parties due to language barriers, but with every encounter (which probably included all of their staff present, plus the owner?) from phone enquiries and booking, to settling in, ordering, cooking and leaving, all the staff were amazing.
The chef assigned to us was evidently skilled and was entertaining and engaging. He was so funny, great with the kids and generous. Looking around, the other chefs were also working hard at their hotplates trying to make their guests dining experience memorable, even one that I noticed may have just started and who took our order when we settled in. When they weren’t cooking, they all helped each other out. The food was very tasty and plentiful and as it was my uncle and husband’s birthdays, they made it special for them, which we all appreciated. From start to end, it was fantastic.
The restaurant is a bit of a hole in the wall, a bit small and more traditional in its decor, but it was very homely. All the other aspects rank higher in importance to me, making this place a 5/5. If you are there purely for the food, staff and cooking show, this is a great place to come to. Just make sure you don’t wear your best clothes if you aren't the best at catching food 😄.
We had such a great time, I am already planning my next visit. Thank you to all the staff at Kyoto for making dinner so enjoyable. A special thanks to our chef tonight as well! We all loved tonight’s experience and this...
Read moreThese positive reviews are extremely hard to justify. I drove from the north shore to have dinner here based on their reviews and was very disappointed. The chef and manager were pleasant but the place was absolutely filthy and would never pass a public health and safety check for sure. The cleaning agents placed on the floor where dusted with grease next to large tubs of dusty teriyaki sauce on the grease laden floor; along the side wall are open cardboard boxes filled with stuff (ie open bags of coloured serviettes, a used street hat, empty wire shelves mixed with rags and a medley of knick knacks thrown in). Think of a college fraternity house - stuff everywhere! The floor was so greasy you could feel the sole of your shoe adhere to the tile and at the same time feel yourself sliding as you take your next step. The windows were cloudy from airborne grease adhering to the glass which looked like they had not cleaned for years. The grilles are filthy with food crusted on the edges and corners. The tables are sticky from grease and the toilets are absolutely disgusting with faeces along the toilet ring from someone's explosive diarrhoea! Double ick. The restrooms look like they are rarely cleaned and relects the condition of the restaurant we dined in. It was pretty gross. I didn't get food poisoning (thank goodness) but I definitely will not be a returning customer. On a positive note, the people were nice but they really are in desperate need to clean the...
Read moreI can see that if this was your first time at Teppanyaki you may give it a 4 stars. However, the place really needs a very good clean. The original chef that cooked the chicken did not talk to anyone and there were no theatrics. He let the sweat from his face drip onto the chicken and when cooking the terryaki chicken used the back of the spatula that had raw chicken juice on it to press down on the cooked side of the chicken. He also did not have the grill hot enough and as a result the chicken was spongy.
The evening was saved by the second much more experienced chef, who was quite entertaining and a much better cook and is the only reason I’m giving 3 stars. Still, I think if you are following to have prawns on the menu, you should get more than...
