I recently re-joined Mosman Rowing Club (usually called "The Rowers" by a lot of Sydney-siders) after having been a member for over 30 years until about 25 years ago. I've sailed on Sydney Harbour, and on offshore and long ocean races for decades, so after a long or a short race, or a delivery trip from the Barrier Reef, it was a highlight in the adventure when we finished up at The Rowers to just enjoy a chat. But then I moved a fair bit further away and I eventually let my Rowers membership lapse. Two years ago a friend who lives in Mosman suggested I join a group enjoying the monthly jazz nights at the club, and I liked the music, the meals, & the fun atmosphere so much I re-joined the club. Since then other friends have come with us because the music has been so good. And there's floor space so we can dance to the great tunes.
It's been getting better & better - the table of people I was with last night (4 July '23), and the whole audience, enjoyed an excellent ~3 hours of jazz/soul/reggae/funk/bee-bop/pop/etc so much that when the night eventually finished the musos got a huge cheer. It was such wonderful entertainment.
And along with the superb music, I reckon the Prix Fixe meal was outstanding!! Delicious, and excellent value like the rest of the menu.
If the chef can match or better the great special meal for the nigh next time, he'll get lots of orders for it. It’s a high standard to match, so I'm looking forward to next month's "first Tuesday jazz night".
For interest, only one person at our table was from the local area. The rest of us are so keen about the great music that it’s worth a trek outside our suburbs to enjoy it.
Years ago the Rowers was a legend in the Sydney club entertainment scene, and they seem to be getting back to the same high standard. I feel they’re on the right track for an enthusiastic roll-up to the club because they've got such a great group of musos, and the quality food we tasted last night should help that along a heap.
For anyone who's not going by car (plenty of free parking), transport can be by ferry or 230 bus route. Or boat, or walking if you're really keen on lot of exercise.
And I definitely will be back for lots of next "first Tuesday" jazz nights because it's...
Read moreThe man who was taking orders at the counter and identified himself as the General Manager refused to answer one of my guests requests about what particular grains were in one of the salad bowls, simply stating that he as the general manger could emphatically state it was a gluten free dish...which was only part of her allergy query and then after our lunch he refused to take our coffee order stating that they were understaffed in the Archie bear dining room as he also had a big function going on upstairs, but then proceeded to take other lunch diners coffee and desert orders...I have never actually witnessed or been subjected to such passive aggressive customer service in my life ...in fact no one at our table could quite believe the service aggression...such a shame because the staff (other than this man) really did cringe and try to make up for his behaviour towards paying customers... I have dined and taken many friends to mosman rowers over the years but will never do so again...truly intimidating customer experience served up by a guy who claimed to be the General Manager . Really Really disappointing ..I have never written a bad review ever before, usually I only leave complimentary reviews otherwise I just walk away with my money but this was actually an...

I took my 9 year old boy for a father and son evening last week to watch the Socceroos play Korea.
There were a dozen or so people at the venue when we arrived at about 7. I checked with the bar that the soccer would be on and was greeted with 'of course'. We settled in for a steak and chatted until kickoff.
At kickoff there were 6-7 patrons present in the lounge with all eyes on the big screen. One of them asked if venue music could be turned down and football broadcast audio could be turned up so we could listen to the commentary. A win for Australia would take us to the top of our group and through to the next rounds.
A bemused english football fan returned from the bar saying 'the club policy is that sports coverage audio is only turned up for important events' ... or a message to that effect. The only people in the venue (a few may have been sitting outside or downstairs) were sitting in front of the big screen - clearly there to support the Socceroos.
With more than 50 million people tuning in across the globe to watch these events - I ask the management and staff of Mosman Rowers club to think a bit harder.
Next time I go...
