Ate here a few days ago during our visit to Sydney and reviewing now that we’re back home. As vegetarians I think there is a huge need to recognize and review places that offer great dishes to our dietary preferences. Too often you go to restaurants that ‘serves vegetarian’ and all you can order are the sides or the dishes offered are no greater than a basic pasta or rice. This restaurant has some GREAT veg options!! Must order: 1) mushroom dimsums 2) vegetarian truffle fried rice 3) sticky eggplant (yum yum yum) 4) morning glory + beans 5) fried ice cream - taste was awesome, just one critique - when you cut into it (video attached), the coating detaches from the icecream and you’re left to eat them independently…I’ve had fried icecream at other places and the coating could be lighter, crispier, and stay with the icecream. Not so great but part of our order: 1) spinach dimsums - not the best texture, needs some crunch or another element aside from the mushy texture, it was also bland for us. 2) noodles (very basic - no veggies and taste is very bland, not much more than a simple tossed boiled ramen noodle packet - would love for the restaurant to oomph this up!) 3) salt pepper tofu - again very bland for our palette, we were quite excited to have a nice tofu dish but without a sauce or again an oomph of flavour, this dish fell short. Overall, even for my kids, this was one of our favourite restaurants during our 2 week trip to Australia and perhaps had the largest variety of vegetarian offerings, and great tasting ones at that - THANK YOU!!

Visited again on 19 Feb Still good service and first time dinning downstairs, looks great! The highlights were the dim sums, xo fried pipi with deep fried rice noodles, and the desserts. Old post Had a great lunch banquet here. The food meets the expectation and the ambient is good in the context of fine dinning. While I personally don't think it's authentic in a sense of down-to-earth chinese dining (and you could find more authentic Chinese food at a different setting and at a far cheaper price but you just can't compare Apple to Orange), Mr Wong has found its own niche and its definitely up there along with hotel quality food you find at a Western hotel in Asia. We had amazing food, drinks, and desert. The drinks range is good where we could order from wine to even Tsing Tao (a great chinese pale lager beer) Pretty amazed by the idea of an high end restaurant located at a hidden alleyway. Impressed with the open kitchen, where you don't normally get to see from a typical chinese restaurants. I like the bathroom design more than the dinning area. The service from the staff is what you would expect from a fine dinning restaurant too, pretty professional. Gotta miss the friendly chats from the pre covid days (now that they all wear masks and refrain from being too chatty). Will come back and try more of their creative/ recommended dishes rather than getting typical dishes you can get from typical restaurants (the spicy wontons were a let down).

Nice and chill ambience with some cosy restaurant noise. I’m personally happy with it. Overpriced food. Really enjoy their dimsim and roasted duck. Not the duck you can find in a Chinese/ Cantonese BBQ restaurant but it is absolutely amazing. Juicy and flavourful yet delicate. Avoid their king crab fried rice and fried ice cream at all cost. The fired rice is salty but bland. The fried ice cream is the cheap one that most Viet restaurants have. Mr Wong just double the price and serve it with a ridiculous amount of an overly sweet caramel sauce. I get it - it’s caramel sauce. What I’m saying is I can drench myself in that sauce. Confusing service. They got our order wrong (wrong fried rice - yep) - it was still fine at this point. FOUR different waiters checked on us - we appreciated that. However, the whole thing felt really pretentious. None of them came back to explain anything. None of them ever said if the fried rice was being cooked or held back or on its way. They came - “sure I’ll check” - and never returned to our table. The fried rice got to our table TWENTY NINE MINS later. Things started getting off-putting at this point. We wanted to order more food and drinks but couldn’t be bothered after all the wait plus disappointment. We asked for our bill TWICE (yep - TWO different waiters - AGAIN) and got it after ONLY TWENTY - TWENTY FIVE MINS waiting. I literally asked to my friends how long more it would take us. At this point I just wanted to get out of there. The total dining time was solid 2 hours but most of the time we were waiting, waiting, and waiting. NO APOLOGIES RECEIVED. The girl with red nail polish was the only one who genuinely cared and felt sorry. My 2c is they should divide their dining area into sections delegated to 1-2 particular waiters each section. Their waiters should communicate with each other AND actually care about customer’s needs and expectations. More training is also a MUST. Am I returning? - A solid NO.

A friend and I visited this restaurant and enjoyed the food. We had the $118 (per person) Banquet + was left full, content + leftovers. Generous portions + flavoursome. Unfortunately, the service itself was incredibly disappointing. Despite organising the night myself, staff did not acknowledge me (only my friend) the whole night minus ordering our meal at the beginning. I am disabled but surely that couldn’t be the reason… The banquet was extensive and empty plates were left on the table while new plates were brought out + placed on the edges of the table (for us to try to manouvre the plate placement so nothing spilled or fell). We had to ask for the empty plates to be removed. One attendant was continually touching his hair as it was falling into his face whilst distributing food. At the end of the night when my friend + I split the bill evenly, this same attendant laughed in my face when I asked why the bill wasn’t split evenly when it was my turn to pay (I was second). I believe he thought I was joking or didn’t understand + only responded with “I don’t know” between laughs. I was left speechless. When coming to a beautiful, quality restaurant like Mr Wong (the fit out is stunning) it’s only natural to expect a quality experience. Again, the food was great + for that aspect alone I recommend. However, I couldn’t believe how collectively the staff seemed unprofessional, offensive + oblivious. I hope they can work on that aspect as the food is worth going for.

Mr. Wong, a traditional Chinese restaurant under the ownership of Merivale, boasts delightful cuisine and a captivating ambiance. The dim sums offered here stand out as some of the finest in Sydney. However, my overall experience is tinged with disappointment. My decision to not return stems from the considerable expense combined with the underwhelming quality of the live crab I ordered. Opting for the Singaporean-style black pepper live mud crab, I had anticipated a customary presentation of the crustacean. Regrettably, this was absent, and although I might have overlooked this absence had the crab been more satisfying, my expectations were not met. The crab dish arrived with a delectable sauce, but the crab itself left much to be desired. It was noticeably meager, with very little edible meat to enjoy. Despite extensive efforts, my partner and I struggled to extract any substantial meat from the crab's various parts. Given that Mr. Wong purportedly sources its seafood from the esteemed Red Claw Seafood, the presence of such an undernourished crab raises questions about its selection and preparation process. Particularly disheartening is the nearly $250 price tag attached to this dish. As a result of this experience, I now value the seafood at my local Chinese restaurants more. It's unfortunate that despite the restaurant's strengths, I find it challenging to consider a return visit based on this disappointment.

Easy to miss old warehouse looking Chinese restaurant in the alleyway. No clear signages around. At 1:30pm, it was hustling bustling with customers dining and wining (hence we were seated late even with a reservation). Extensive selection of wine, and the servers were great recommending the wine to pair. The French server from Lyon was so helpful and pleasant. Low key light and exposed wooden beams and bricks, and arch window of course are my weaknesses so I was charmed by the atmosphere. Foods however were not too charming. Small portions (4 pieces of thin steamed fish at $54? Perhaps the menu should have photos so guests know what they are getting into), not all that special flavours except maybe for the sweet and sour pork. S&S Pork was extraordinary being served in cubes instead of the usual battered and deep fried with sauce version. The texture of the meat (where do I begin???) and the flavour of the sauce were surely interesting, however came with high level of sodium. The fried rice had interesting topping that gave added texture with every bite and the portion was huge. I never order fried rice when I go out, but in this occasion I was glad someone ordered it. Ohhhhh the desert!!! The Mango pudding with lychee shaved ice was refreshing as well as the raspberry desert. The tempura ice cream with the caramel sauce was super. The chocolate mouse with salty sweetness was lovely. They deserve 5 stars.
