Haven't been here in two or so years, however I had fond memories of good home style food and good portion sizes, so after some debate it was decided to take some friends from out of town here to scratch an itch for Indian.
Our visit yesterday was dinner for three on site in the restaurant.
Portions for the mains and entrees were very very small, eyebrows raised when placed on the table. I understand that the restaurant industry is tough and margins are thin, but this was just too small not to become a discussion point at the table.
The real test is the taste, sadly none of the curries had any heat (spice) which was a disappointment. Certainly not how I remembered it from years past. And everything was very sweet.
Perhaps the last review (looked like a millennial complained everything was too hot) made them dial it back to zero to tone it down? Alas it's swung too far the other way, and I prefer less heat to most. Unfortunately there was zero bite and I was looking forward to some heat.
We also experienced slow service, a very small table which we asked to change. It was really tight, with the cutlery and plates there wasn't room for wine glasses let alone a plate of food, and for what we paid (107$ for three people with no drinks and tap water only) the only burning we felt was to the wallet.
Everyone agreed all the dishes were way too small and way too sweet and lacking any detectable heat (spice). One of the folks at the table lives in KL and eats quality Indian food frequently with family who have Indian / SE asian background. They didn't finish their servings.
Two stand outs which we had were the butter chicken (no heat at all) but tasty, if a little sweet. And the rice with sultanas and nuts which was very good, the naan was well prepared.
Perhaps there are new owners, or a new chef has taken this in a different direction.
There were many locals popping in for take out, so this seems to be still doing a decent amount of business with locals...
Read moreWhen you google Nawaz Flavour of India in Glebe, you are quickly overwhelmed by the sheer number of 5 star reviews. However as a curry club, we’ve seen this before, and we are cautious not to take any bias or preconception into a curry house.
Our adventure started with the suggestion of papadums and a selection of sides - a unanimous yes please from the MNCC. The lime pickle cut through the mix, with Deli Pateli claiming even his father would be proud of this flavour. Then a warm salad appeared that was “on the house”. This was a unique dish with chickpeas, cawliflower, greens and a sweet spicy dressing. We ordered 15 curries between us with spicy beef, succulent lamb, a rich Dahl and our first experience of the Tandoor sizzler. All cooked to perfection. There were murmurs around the table, fueled by the Curry Cowboy that the Malai Kofta could be the best curry the MNCC have ever seen.
When you are seasoned curry devours like the MNCC it’s not often you have an experience where the flavours, smells, preparation and presentation are completely unique and refreshing, and Nawaz delivered all of this.
The meaning of Nawaz in Hindi is to caress and sooth, and that is exactly how we felt when we left the restaurant....
Read moreI tried this place during my last long-term trip to Sydney from Vancouver, Canada.
In Vancouver, there is an established Indian community with excellent restaurants. So I had a high standard when I went to Nawaz Flavour!
I must admit that they defeated me 😂 and I had an absolutely satisfying experience. Here are some of the highlights;
1- Ujwala was our server and she is a total delight. I can confidently say that our wonderful experience was in part due to her great attitude and help in choosing from the menu, and the follow ups. She went out of her way giving us (me, my brother and my parents) samples to choose from and I am very grateful to her.
2- The food was delicious! We ordered butter chicken (medium spicy), beef saagi, and beef jalfrazie. All 3 were top-notch and tasted fabulous.
3- The decor was very comforting and beautiful. Here is the bonus; it was super warm outside (+25) and the other restaurants we considered were mega warm inside!! On the contrary, this place had a nice AC making it a pleasant restaurant. Much appreciated!
Totally recommend Nawaz Flavour! Very nice supervisor (suraj) too. This is my favorite Indian restaurant in Sydney. Will go...
