Tramsheds — Local services in Sydney

Dropped rating by 1* as Centre Management keep breaking the law on DDA compliance and maybe fire safety by turning off the automatic doors whenever it suits them. If you're in a wheelchair like me, you don't want to have to take a 600m round trip just to get out

Some fantastic restaurants such as Bekya (5) and Flour Eggs Water (5) plus some convenient ones (Farmer/Butcher, Osaka Trading Co, Belle's Hot Chicken). Good artisan bread from Dust, but no slicer, Sir Chapel Brewery does bad Campos with an oft-closed takeaway counter so get Toby's Estate from Dust instead (not great but not burnt). Fish&Co is awful, expensive with an abrasive owner who refused to check ingredients of produce for us despite our son having life-threatening allergies. Chips there are from Aldi if they run out of their usual brand of wheat-coated rubbish,and the fish is overcooked (1*). They sell expensive but usually fresh portioned fish, I'd buy that and cook at home if you really want to give them your hard-earned. Chambers Cellars gas a good selection of red wine for the size of shop, but no cigars and a limited array of other things, Moe&Co is hipster vibe shavecuts if that's your thing and Naked Foods sells good dried fruit in paper bags, by weight. I've not used the pharmacy/doctors (Harold Park Medical Centre), The Nail Bar or Boxing Works but all look modern and friendly. Lastly, Messina gets busy but has nicer staff than Surry Hills or The Star and the Supamart is not horribly expensive.

If you have kids, be aware that the inside of the tram is sometimes roped off for special events and can only be accessed through Butcher and the Farmer, so call them ahead of time to avoid disappointment if that's why you're there.

Review Feb 2017

Now everything has settled and the food outlets have found their way, a re-review was called for.

The general vibe is that this place is cool (& it is), the food is generally very good but a bit too expensive (apparently the rents are very high - or so owners tell me).

The landscaping out front remains poor (e.g. cars instead of open space), the baby change and toilets are as good as they come (well done).

The question is this - why pay the high prices for food? Is it worth it?

Well, it's the same price as eating in the QVB, which has a great atmosphere. This place does too - so, yes it's worth it, but we find it unaffordable for more than once a month.

So, I'm updating my rating from 2 to 3 stars. If the food was a little cheaper or they removed the carpark out front, I'd give it 4 to 5.

Review on opening:

It's an amazing space, but hampered to two key issues.

The price. We've now eaten here in four different places and prices are generally $5-10 more than you would expect per dish. Today a burger and chips was $25 - nice but not worth $25. Everyone I know who has been has said the same.

The landscaping. The carpark out front is really terrible. There are 10 stairs on the only route in from the canal. On opening day, there were traffic controllers directing people up the stairs - apart from every parent - who was made to push their pram 50m up a road with cars driving around them.

A massive opportunity has been missed - they could have built a market space out front, which could have become a community space. Instead we have cars.

Other than these the range of food, the supermarket (not Coles!), the restoration and the baby changing room...

Just a heads up, this is about one particular restaurant (Redline Pub) not the Tramsheds as a whole which I love to visit(one bad apple).

Firstly, should have known this experience would be bad when the place is empty while most other restaurants are buzzing at the Tramsheds!

My wife had a craving for fish and chips and I wanted a good pub chicken schnitzel and chips.

You sit down and order at the bar, bartender was real nice guy, so far so good.

Open kitchen so you can see the “chef” and staff working, all of who looked totally disengaged and as the place was empty were just standing around. Warning bells…

Second warning was seeing them pull out my pre-prepared schnitzel that looked mass produced.

Anyway we received our meals, mine looked ok, plain looking salad, reasonable sized schnitzel and shoestring chips with a side of gravy (packet for sure).

My wife had two small pieces of greasy look battered fish and shoestring chips with tartare sauce.

Chicken schnitzel was bland, shoestring chips average, and I didn’t even try the salad which just looked boring.

One of my wife’s greasy pieces of fish was of average thickness, but the other piece, no word of a lie was paper thin (how can that be done?) so it was basically just a pocket of batter!

What a rip off! $24 for each dish should have stuck with a real pub where we could a way better meal for half the price!

Not a good Sunday experience at...
