Yesterday 3 friends and myself went on a kayak tour around Sydney Harbour with Matt from Paddle Pirates. We were all expecting it to be good but our expectations were exceeded. Matt is professional but honestly it feels like he’s another mate on the tour with you! That part alone was a huge reason as to why we had such an incredible time. He made us all feel safe and were talked through everything and all our questions were happily answered before heading out on the water. He is full of really interesting facts and history about the gorgeous Sydney Harbour and Goat Island- side note Goat Island was such a rare treat! He was so personable, easy going and a heap of fun, even treated us to a little sea shanty! He took his role as a photographer very seriously and got some really awesome shots of us that I know we will look back on and smile in years to come. I honestly cannot fault a single thing about Paddle Pirates or Matt, the entire experience was a solid 10/10 and such great value for money. This is such a wonderful, non invasive, respectful and intimate way to see our beautiful harbour. If you’re considering this at all, don’t hesitate, you won’t regret it, Paddle Pirates with Matt is...
Read moreKayaking on Sydney Harbour hasn't ever been on my bucket list but while my number one bucket list item remains unavailable to me – travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway from Vladivostok to Moscow – a girl just has to do what a girl can do for fun and adventure in her own backyard. I can't begin to tell you how much fun this was, not only did I learn heaps about Goat Island in Sydney Harbour (for instance, this is where they filmed the TV Series 'Water Rats') but seeing Sydney city and the surrounding areas like Pyrmont and Balmain from sea level was an astonishing delight – I can still see that glittering controversial sky-scraper Crown Tower in my mind's eye (I actually like its space-age architecture).
I'd never even been in a kayak before this, but was lucky enough to be the only participant at this session, so the instructor Daniel literally had my back – we were in a two person kayak – and so I was able to really enjoy the scenery whilst learning how to paddle. I only held the paddle the wrong way once - which was pretty good...

Plus size individuals beware! As a member of the plus size community, it’s my duty to let others know about my experience here. Upon arrival to the boat house, we had to do a “fit check,” to see if the sea kayaks were going to be comfortable aka fit my body. I got into the sea kayak and immediately felt embarrassed because it didn’t fit, at all. I’m 5’8, 250lbs for reference. The guide then told me I’d have to use the bigger, non-sea kayak, stating that it was slower than the sea kayaks, but we’d be fine. So, feeling a deep sense of shame, I wiggled my way into a non-sea kayak and shoved off. Wouldn’t you know, that we indeed were the slowest and unable to keep up with the rest of the group (all in sea kayaks). I was unable to hear what the guide was saying for most of the trip. Not worth the money. Would not go back.
Business tip: invest in sea Kaya’s for larger bodies and additional...
