Walking into the north end of King Street Newtown after a theatre outing looking for food is bit tricky. Six different restaurants told us the kitchen was closed. Night life is getting harder in Sydney. Then I remembered the Pastizzi Cafe. I have already written a couple of reviews of their cafe on the south end of King Street. Italian/Maltese hospitality is usually a winner. I thought, I bet they are open later than the others. I was right - their kitchen does not close until midnight. Apart from the usual excellent pastizzi, their menu is ideal for a casual dinner with friends. Plenty of choice of wines and other drinks. The photos with this review give you an idea of what some of our group enjoyed. The white bait fritters served with a Greek style salad was my choice. The fritters were moist inside and not over fried. The dressing on the salad was a bit strong. The four cheese gnocchi (anglo name here) was just so cheesy! The gnocchi were just right and the cheeses were a little over the top - but hey, that is what this dish is all about. I could not resist the chocolate zuccherato (I think I have the name right). Filled with a chocolate mousse style filling which should not need the cream on the side but oh well just go with it…… The staff were attentive and the service quick. There were not that many diners in that night so I wonder how the service would go when they are pumping. Pastizzi Cafe is a great option for a late dinner. Now I am a fan of both Pastizzi Cafes - north and south.

Okay - wow! These pastizzis are incredible. The cafe has quite an unassuming front, and if you're walking from the main hubbub of King Street toward Broadway, you'll reach this place as all the restaurants & cafes start to peter out, so I was a little skeptical! Places that serve specific (delicious) pastries such as this, always seem to be $7 per pastry or $3 per pastry and there seems to be no in-between. But this place is at the exceptionally decent pricing end of the scale, for a wonderful, warm, delicious pastizzi for only $3! They have vegetarian options and also have a gourmet range such as the Mexican Beans option, which are a little pricier but only by an extra $1 or so. There was only one male staff member working, but he was exceptionally friendly. He also wasn't rushed, and took his time with each customer, ensuring he'd accurately heard and fulfilled what they were after. There were a handful of customers dining in, and upon leaving, they dropped by the counter and (heavily!) praised how delicious the food was - always a good sign. I'd absolutely recommend dropping in. The pastries were warm, fresh and inexpensive. And there's also a freezer at the front of the store, where you can buy a frozen packet of pastizzis. Will definitely be back!

Pastizzis here are realllly good. Decent prices for portions and a variety of food on the menu. Beyond that, I found the food here to be a bit overrated. We had to add so much salt, pepper, chilli or Parmesan to flavor our food in the three times we dined in this place. Garlic bread was nice. You can’t go wrong with that. Ravioli was very very average. Risotto was SO bland, rice was a bit soggy and the sauce too thin. Eggplant parmigiana was okay. Gnocchi was ok but really less than your average home cooked pasta. Service is not the best. When I went a few days ago the woman that welcomed us was very rude about where we could be seated. She had a very rough attitude and sighed loudly when we took the time to choose. Really turned us off and we wanted to leave but thought we’d give the place another chance regardless of her unnecessary attitude. She was also very rough giving us menus too and kept rolling her eyes at nothing. She made a lot of facial expressions of discomfort I almost asked her if she needed help. Luckily turned out it was the end of her shift and seemed like she just wanted to get home. Not my problem and not what she’s being paid for. The girls that took over after her were soo lovely. We even found a piece of plastic in our eggplant parmigiana and they took care of that very graciously. We were given a new plate and not charged for the mistake. The bartender was lovely too. I had a basil cocktail thing but that was overpriced for what it was. Atmosphere is average. Less than average if you’re being welcomed in with the attitude we have experienced dining in. Take away attitudes are much better. Smooth take away process and actually quite fast.

Update Nov 2024 Last two visit food not as good. Unpretentious Gem A really nice restaurant(cafe style) at the Uni end of King Street Newtown. Two sides to the restaurant street facing and at side restaurant. We sat at the side but I think street facing would be better and a bit cooler in hot weather. Good fresh food our mango and prawn salad really delicious. Our friends are vegetarian and they had lovely eggplant dish. It’s BYO so a bonus but it has licence and offers cocktails and other drinks see photos for offerings. The layout of the restaurant offers tables for groups of 4 + and at the side near us was a group of six people. It has a trendy ( in a good way) feel about the restaurant, it’s run by a few twenty year olds and the whole experience is really good. Reach it on foot from Newtown train station. Bathrooms very nice. Cost us $66 per couple and that’s good value. I recommend this place for meeting a couple of besties or a small group not a solo or couples on a date place. A nice find. Follow me for me reviews. Love your local guide-M❤️

ad dinner here on the 24/02/2021. The service from wait staff was excellent here and they offer complimentary parmesan and chillies. The portions sizes are good. Some of the items are a bit and a miss and they are very liberal with the salt on all there dishes. The spaghetti marinara was good with a nice variety of seafood, the mussels however did have beards left in and the dish was a bit too salty. The Roasted potatoes were cooked perfectly but had a lot of salt. The garlic bread was toasted nicely. The pasta boscaiola was creamy and well balanced. The ravioli in pink sauce was good however the sauce overpowered the ravioli. The veal fungi was an absolute disaster as it was dry and overcooked, tough and hard to cut. The pasta carbonara was good but salty. The gnocchi was good and well balanced. The cannelloni was fresh and Had a good amount of filling.

We had a recent Sunday lunch at this popular cafe in Newtown and ordered a few of their famous pastizzi pastries and two main dishes i.e. the prawn & crab ravioli with vongole sauce and the 4-cheeses gnocchi. We love the pastries, especially the one with chunky, saucy beef and the one with cheese fillings. The main dishes were just average, while the clam / vongole sauce was very salty. The customer services from staff members are reasonable for a cafe in Newtown. Cafe ambience is average since it is opened style not enclosed, so expect heat in summer time. Prices on the menu are relatively premium and expected for such area like Newtown. You can pay with V / MC credit cards and pay additional 1.65% surcharge which is quite high compared to usual rate of up to 1.5%.
