I love absolutely everything about this place; the food, the atmosphere and the people that make it happen.
The food, Pizza, it sounds like it's been done before but this place takes it to a whole new level. Artisan bases crafted over 48 hours, carefully selected toppings, low sodium content and all put together by a truly over qualified and kind hearted man. It's an unreal eating experience, the best pizza I've ever had by the longest of margins.
As a vegetarian I had Helga's Garden which was had the freshest ingredients and just the right amount of everything, with no spot left without toppings. The single pizza left me feeling satisfied with no bloatedness or gross post-pizza cough. As healthy and delicious a pizza can get. Notably too, a vegan cheese option if that's what you're looking for.
The atmosphere, it's great. It's hard to separate the people and atmosphere with such a small place but with the comedy club next door, regular stream of interesting patrons, and the historical significance of El Rocco in the Australian Jazz scene since the 1950s - you can really feel history here if you're paying attention.
Finally, the people. I was in town by myself and staying in a hotel by myself when Justin in hotel reception recommended El Rocco's Pizza. When I walked up to El Rocco initially I really wasn't sure what to expect, I looked at the menu and found only two vegetarian options. When hearing this, Leon, quickly and understandingly whipped up 3 more suggested options. This is a great start as someone who on occasion, has been judged for my dietary requirements. I ordered and sat down by myself. Leon, despite being a one-man show and absolutely obliterated with orders and customers, who all received Michelin star level of attention, understanding and service, made me feel like I was part of this small community introducing me to the history of the location, jazz musicians and comedy club patrons alike. We chatted away and he shared his passions with me, for pizza, espresso and history. I've never felt more apart of a community in such a short amount of time. Thank you Leon, again. I'm pretty sure I thanked you 5 or more times throughout my visit but here we are again.
If all of this ranting has you wanting a pizza from this place, you'll want to go early. Go directly there between 7pm and 8pm and don't be late - they sell out almost every night. And don't forget to have a chat to Leon while...
Read moreThis spot was an accidental find on mine and my partners first trip to Sydney after a long day of walking (16kms!!). We made the trek back to our hotel and decided along the way we'd get some pizza to take back. The second we arrived at this little shop front, the atmosphere was immaculate. The owner was phenomenal, he convinced to eat in and it was the best decision we made all day. He was absolutely fantastic and the food was the best pizza we have ever had! For the 40ish minutes we stayed there we indulged in worldclass pizza from bases the owner preps 48hours in advance! It was truly an amazing experience with great drinks (Italian soda?!) and even better pizza! We'll definitely be coming back here whenever we...
Read moreHands down the best pizza I’ve had in Sydney so far. Decided to come here for dinner last night on a whim and absolutely no regrets. It’s a tiny little shop run by a one-man show, with just 2 tables that seat 2 people each, so not a place for groups. You can tell that Leon, the owner and pizza extraordinaire, is so passionate about what he does and makes every pizza with so much love and attention to detail. Would highly recommend for a quiet, cozy date night with a friend or a date :)
Just a heads up though: there’s a chance that Leon may be sold out of pizza towards the end of the day as his dough base requires hours and hours of preparation. So...
