On a cold winter night nothing beats a warm tasty treat from my local ramen shop Rahmen Genki. Tonight I'm defaulting to my favourite Tonkotsu ramen ($12) with the rich pork soup taste. Because I'm extra hungry I'm ordering extra roast pork topping ($5) and gyoza ($6). My other favourite is the curry rice that had yummy Japanese rice with curry and large chunks of beef which I usually have for lunch. The decor at Genki is what I would call Japanese rustic. The kitchen is in the middle of things where you could see lots of giant pots a boiling and woks a cooking. There are Japanese posters and mounted autographs of what I think are baseball players. The head chef also have a photo of playing golf with the SBS Iron chef (the original master chef. You'll be dining with the tunes of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga or whoever is the latest pop star blasting out the radio. This is not fast food. It may take a while to get your food especially during the peak dining times when you are most likely to be joining a buzzing crowd of local Japanese residents waiting for their food. But I assure you that it will be worth the wait. Genki had been here as long as I can remember since I moved to Sydney more than 10 years ago. It remains the anchor establishment in the cluster of Japanese eating places and shops that had sprouted at the back of Artarmon train station and I'm happy that it...
Read moreWe had quick lunch on recent Saturday at this old Japanese casual restaurant in Artarmon. We ordered mix-don (a rice with fried pork cutlet tonkatsu and fried prawn ebi furai) and ton shogayaki don (stir fried pork belly with ginger sauce + rice). Both dishes were good authentic Japanese lunch staples and we love them. The mix-don was the better option and comes with nice miso soup.
We visited second time on recent weekend and tried the Godzilla ramen, tonkatsu curry rice and cream croquette (or korokke as Japanese pronounces it). The curry rice was quite good, but felt a bit let down by the ramen soup which was very thin and light, almost similar with instant noodle soup. The noodle and pork cha-shu were OK but without good soup, the whole bowl did not get my approval.
The place is quite spacious and you can choose to sit inside or outside al fresco style. The ambience is reasonable for suburban casual restaurant. The customer services from staff members were reasonable as well. The menu items are quite extensive and prices are competitive with similar set-ups in Sydney. The best thing is that you can pay with all credit cards (including Amex) without additional surcharge - which is the best customer...
