I came here recently for a combined birthday bash with over 20 people. To be honest, my past experiences with other restaurants when it comes to big groups have generally been disappointing when it comes to service and accuracy of food and drinks ordered. Not this place. Ohhh, boy were my perceptions wrong!! We were one of the last guests to arrive whilst everyone else was already seated. I was informed that food orders were not taken yet. I assumed it would take a while but it wasn’t long until a waiter started doing the rounds in taking everyone’s food orders. Some of the waitstaff wore a face shield and a mask whereas others wore a mask only. It was nice to see the staff were given a choice to wear whatever PPE they felt comfortable with. My hubby and I ordered cocktails to start, followed by the scallops and deep fried mushrooms for entree. The scallops were flavoursome and delicious. The mushrooms were lovely too. I had the Soft Shell Crab with steamed rice for my main and my husband ordered a Chicken Pad See Ew. It was really generous of the restaurant to offer unlimited rice refills as the waitstaff would come around and fill your plate with any amount of rice you want. This is never seen at other Thai places I’ve been to. I thoroughly enjoyed my crab but knew I couldn’t finish it all. Our waiter very kindly packed my leftovers up but not just that, offered to pack some rice for me as well!!! Talk about service and going above and beyond!! How could I refuse?! We served 2 x large birthday cakes and the staff were wonderful in cutting and serving the cakes quickly and efficiently to our table. When it came to bill settlement, the staff allowed us to pay separately by bringing an EFTPOS machine to settle our bill. The group agreed that the service we received was simply outstanding, very attentive and left a generous tip. Thank you, Thai Pothong for all your hard work on the night!! You have won my husband & I as customers should we ever visit Newtown again!

(4.5 stars) For a lesson in longevity, we returned to Thai Pothong, a Newtown stalwart for just short of thirty years. With a name that translates to golden pho leaf, the restaurant is named for the pho (fig) tree under which Buddha became enlightened in his 35th year. Walking into the space is a visual assault: there’s just so much gold! Golden artworks and bric-a-brac line the walls, with sculptural pieces arranged along the shorter dividing walls that break up the large space. Despite every table being full, this division sees sound reduced to a dull roar. Strong systems see us quickly seated in a galley of smaller tables with iPad menus, water and wine glasses (they allow BYO for $5/person) all before I can say we have cinema tickets and need to be out within the hour. Staff move even more quickly and we are soon slurping chilli scallops ($20/4) from their shells and folding betel leaf prawns ($19/4) into tidy little parcels to stuff into our mouths. With a balanced and moist combination of sweet chilli, roasted coconut, cashew nut, lime, onion and roe, the betel leaves prove excellent exemplars of this popular dish. Banana blossom salad ($30) is beautifully presented and a memory highway to the first version of this dish I ate in the nineties at Lime & Lemongrass in Kings Cross. It doesn’t quite match the original’s rose petal scattered perfection, but it’s in the ballpark. Requests for heat were well accommodated in a blistering pork jungle curry ($24) popping with Thai eggplants, eaten over individual bowls of calming coconut rice ($7/each). This necessitated mango sticky rice ($23) presented in a way that is bound to make you smile. We were in and out with fifteen minutes spare to cross the road to Dendy Cinemas Newtown: a stalwart for good reason.

I am generally so blown away with this place. This was in one of my most anticipated restaurants and it has exceeded expectations. I went here for my friends 20th birthday with a party of 10 but he didn't mention it was his birthday on the booking. Despite that, birthday balloons were set up for the special moment and he was blown away as well. Thanks for making it so special for him. Also, thanks for the complimentary mint chocolates for everyone. And the complimentary ice cream cake for the birthday boy. The food was fantastic, it was hard to fault anything on the food. Everything was excellent on this restaurant and my favourites were the Pad See Yu, Scallops and Baby Octopus. I don't usually like Pad Thai but the Pad Thai in this restaurant is next level. The same thing goes for the Soft Shell Crab. I don't usually like Crab but this restaurant has done justice to that. The prawn fried rice and beef salad were a nice combo to have as well. The vibe on this restaurant feels very prestigious and it is humungous. It definitely feels like Sydney's best Thai restaurant. Food were quickly brought out and service was attentive. This restaurant has become one of my favourite restaurants ever and will definitely 100 percent return. PS: I would like this restaurant to keep the transformers at the entrance. It has become an iconic sight in Thai Pothong / Newtown and would be sort of ashame if it were sold off.

I had always noticed this restaurant bustling with people every time I passed by, which made me wonder and led me to finally give it a try. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. The food was a major letdown. Many of the dishes were excessively sweet, lacking the authentic Thai flavors that I was eagerly looking for. The fish, in particular, was a disappointment. It tasted like frozen fish rather than fresh, which negatively impacted both its taste and texture. The stir-fry water spinach was the only redeeming dish of the meal. I also realised the restaurant is more expensive compared to other Thai places. It seems that the higher price tag is more reflective of the service and ambiance rather than the quality of the food. The only good experience I had was their service. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the environment in the restaurant was pleasant and comfortable. The ambiance was inviting, and the service team made an effort to enhance the dining experience. Despite these positives, the overall meal did not justify the hype or the crowds. Based on my experience, I won’t be returning. With their close to 5k google reviews, I am left questioning if those reviews are genuine.

With many Thai restaurant competitors in the area, this one stands out due to its large size and previous awards, and id say it’s pretty good. We made a booking during the opening of the night and we were seated promptly and provided screen menus to look at. A waiter will take your order and I think what surprised me the most was how quickly everything came. Within minutes, our food items were already brought over but in weird orders. We got the coconut rice first, then our mains, cocktails and finally the entree. Considering how quickly everything came, it kinda still works. I will recommend two servings of rice to accompany any curry dish as one isn’t enough but $3 extra for coconut rice over standard is pretty steep. The meals itself tasted quite nice and had a decent kick of spice. The fried ice cream we had delivered after our mains was pretty good too. I think I was most impressed with the sticky rice mango cocktail as the drink tasted nice but also enjoyed the additional sticky rice balls and mango slices on top. I understand that mangoes aren’t in season and I appreciate when they don’t substitute with frozen mangoes.
