My partner and I visited Apex Bakery in Tanunda hoping for a warm, satisfying pie on a chilly morning. The wood-fired bakery caught our eye, but sadly, the experience didnât live up to the expectation.
From the outside, the bakery is quite plain and the outdoor tables were dirty, which already set a bit of a tone. Inside, the store was empty, and despite several staff being present, there was no greeting or acknowledgment, which felt a bit unwelcoming.
The range of food was surprisingly limited. There was no clear display of pies or sausage rollsâjust a small warmer behind the counter. I ordered the mince, cheese, and bacon pie, and my partner went with the curry pie. The service at the counter came off as a bit abrupt, which didnât improve the mood.
We found a clean table outside to sit and eat, but unfortunately the pies were only lukewarm. The mince, cheese, and bacon filling was grey and completely lacking in flavourâvery reminiscent of soft, bland hospital or nursing home food. The curry pie was similarly underwhelming, with no real spice or taste to the filling. The pastry was the only redeeming partâcrispy and well-madeâbut not enough to save the meal.
Portion sizes were quite small for the price, which felt steep for what we received. Sadly, the experience was disappointing overall and didnât brighten our morning as weâd hoped. We wonât be...

Read moreThis place is actually one of the best bakeries I've eaten at. It looks pretty plain from the outside which gave me a good feeling about what might be hidden inside. I hadn't eaten all day so I ordered a curry pie, a pasty and I bought some spiced honey biscuits to take home. This bakery is not cheap but the food is worth every cent. First, the curry pie. The curry was just great. The pastry was lightly crisp but still soft. It was just heaven. Next the pasty. Oh no, I had forgotten to ask for sauce which usually makes me enjoy it less. It made no difference in this case, that pasty stood it's own and demanded I enjoy it as it was and it really delivered. Another outstanding example. I decided to try a honey biscuit. The quality was just relentless. I tried to stop eating them but it took some time to find the willpower. This place is simply a must visit if you're in, or near Tanunda. I am raving about this place...
