We had a warm welcome and my food (fishcakes) was nice. However these guys advertise a separate 'gluten free menu' which is why we tried them as my husband is a coeliac. Unfortunately however, while our server was really lovely, they seemed to be really unclear on what 'gluten free' actually means - my husband asked about the steak sandwich and chips (gf bread) so whether the relish and bbq sauce were definitely GF (answer: not sure) and if the chips are cooked in a separate oil (answer: no). If the chips aren't cooked in a separate oil to the oil in which you cook food containing gluten e.g. bread crumbed fish, then the chips are NOT gluten free and shouldn't be advertised as such. Similarly, if you're going to operate a gluten free menu your staff need to be fully educated on what gluten is and that in order for a meal to be advertised as 'gluten free' it must be entirely free of gluten - that includes any sauces involved and using a separate oil for any fried or grilled components (using the same oil for both = cross-contamination). If you can't guarantee that each component of a meal is gluten free it is misleading and dangerous to advertise it as such - I appreciate you are probably trying to cater for those who are only gluten intolerant or for those following a GF diet to be trendy, but if so then you should label those meals as something like 'gluten friendly' rather than 'gluten free' with a caveat that your kitchen isn't a GF environment.
P.s. we had a takeaway coffee at the end which was delicious - such a shame...
Read moreMixed feelings about this place. Even under previous management, the place felt like a sterile box with no atmosphere. It still feels the same. But, today, we opted to buy a couple of take-away drinks. To be fair, it was reasonably busy but not crazy busy.
We stood right next to the waitress at the counter while she tapped away for some time on a tablet. Clearly in her peripheral vision, she acted like we weren't there. Eventually, she asked what we wanted. She pointed to the "large" take-away cups which are, in fact, medium-sized everywhere else, and we were charged $6.00 for each. Very expensive!
We then waited for 10 minutes or more. Eventually, we popped back in and asked if our order was still in the line OK. The answer was an impatient and somewhat sarcastic, "Yeeeaaah!" When the drinks came out, she was friendlier.
However, for us, we've learned we get a nicer atmosphere, friendlier service, and definitely better value for...
Read moreWent there for breakfast but ended up leaving in disgust. My wife is in a wheelchair and has a serious neurological condition requiring the use of a special drinking mug and ergonomic cutlery. Service was refused unless my wife used the cafe's standard cutlery and a takeaway mug. Reason given was Covid safety. We regarded this attitude as discrimination - we didn't want the staff to handle either the mug or the cutlery, so there was no danger of contamination or any increased risk of infection to staff. If personal items like this are banned, how come it is OK for us to have handbags and a mobile phone on the table? Staff training is obviously required. My advice? If you have a disability, go elsewhere - we went to the Greedy Goat and had a...
