Brown Deli — Restaurant in Victoria

I wanted to love this place so bad! I’ve been missing a good bagel since 5 and Dime bagels closed in Melbourne. Menu and overall vibe looked really promising but bagel heaven it was not. My breakfast bagel was more a sweet doughy roll than a proper boiled bagel. Didn’t love the combo of egg, bacon and iceberg lettuce, don’t think it worked.

We also asked for one bagel with well cooked bacon but neither bagel was identified as the one with the well cooked bacon order, nor did either seem to have the well-cooked bacon within.

Sadly I couldn’t recover from the lack of ‘real’ bagel, and only managed to eat half before dumping it, the flavours didn’t work for me.

My partner and I stumbled across this little delight on a walk one year ago when they had just opened and it’s one of our favourite places for coffee because they know how to make a consistently excellent coffee. The staff are just lovely, always smiling and very accommodating to dietary requirements. The toasties are amazing, huge portions no skimping on the toppings but my favourite thing is their gluten free banana bread, toasted with butter! Delicious. They offer lots of different drinks and such a nice touch the tiny teddy on top of your cup. Today was their first birthday and offered free coffee all day, any size. Lovely staff, great menu and nice location right by the beach. I eat many bagels and ordered the egg + bacon. It took a while to come but I think they were still finding their feet. The egg and bacon was ok but definitely needs additional relish/sauce, it’s a bit bare in current form. The addition of lettuce is interesting, and I feel this should probably be removed from most of the bagels. I’d also suggest using a different brand of halloumi, as the current one wasn’t very flavoursome. Regardless, I’ll be back to try others (like Kim Chi) as I feel Brown deli has a lot...
