Found this place by accident. Hidden away in a skinny little laneway, worthy of any in Melbourne. Both inside and outside seating in an interesting and eclectic and colourful environment with exposed plumbing, brickwork, Graffiti and posters. Spanish style food with a limited range of Tapas, and lots of tempting mains and snacks. Our selection of 4 Tapas was very good value and very tasty, especially the Paella Bomb and the Salmon. I really enjoyed my toasted sandwich with Spanish Ham and my son loved the Cubano Burrito. Staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Only negatives were the waiters seemed to forget us and quite a few times we had to go looking for them. They are spread a bit thin over a very long, very very skinny venue. But still..... We love Tapas and would have liked to see a larger range than just 4. Generally we would order 10- 20 depending on how hungry we are between the 3 of us. 4 is not enough! I'll certainly be back when in...
Read moreShopping done, it was time for lunch. A quick walk down Chancery Lane and two vacant tables beckoned to sit down. Only one minor problem, my dining companion was not keen to sit in the sun. No problems for our El Gordo waiter, who quickly and without fuss moved the table into the shade. Menus delivered, two degustation meals ordered and we both settled down to our drinks which are part of the degustation meal. I had the cold Estrella Damm and my friend had a sweet white. The tapas dishes did not disappoint. The food is of a high quality. Waiters are attentive without being over the top. No fake, how was your meal sir, at El Gordo. A great dining experience and prices were very reasonable. I finished off with Finn's Chicago Dry gin which complimented the meal well. My friend finished with a short black coffee beans from League Heights, India. The coffee had hints of white chocolate, nougat and roasted almonds. Well...
Read moreEl gordo within the simplicity of itself, has found a sense of purity. It has simplicity in its flavor, using only few ingredients, with each one having freedom to stand out to its fullest. Through ingenious combinations of fresh ingredients, each ingredient plays into each other. For example seared yellow fin tuna, on the outside black sesame seeds giving the feeling of a charcoal finish. They play like a reminder to keep chewing, each sesame seed bit into adds a deepness to the flavor and with each chew of the tuna, the more flavour is released, finding balance by pulling equally to the extreme.
Incredibly nutritional the tapas are more akin to how a full meal would be in spain Small plates delivered to you with a selection of food almost like when topping your plate up at a family feast With each bit being a celebration of Spanish culture
