Saint Florian — Restaurant in Victoria

I keep meaning to do a review of Saint Florian but wheather it's just a cake and coffee or a lunch I enjoy the fare so much that by the time I remember to do a review I have eaten most of what I ordered. Today I remembered!

I have been eating at Castlemaines cafes for 25 years and it was such a delight that after the cafe closures of Covid I discovered St Florian. Castlemaine is not wanting for Cafes but I am particular about my coffee and cakes.

While I certainly have a soft spot for Strudel at another well known Cafe I have to say Saint Florian is by far the best Cafe that Castlemaine has.

The coffee is perfect even the decaf which is often bitter is perfect here with a full flavour you would not know it was decaffeinated. The range of cakes made on the premises is superb.

The lunch menu while not intended to be restaurant like is adequate and has some incredibly creative and tasteful small meals.

The atmosphere the service, food, coffee and cakes are wonderful, all in all a testament to all the heartfelt energy the owners and staff quite clearly infuse into all that is Saint Florian.

Called in today, and unfortunately the limited menu wasn't to our liking so thought we'd respectfully move on.... Apparently this candor shall not be tolerated!... The "gentleman" who greeted us, and came to our table to "serve" us was tetchy, and impertinent in the extreme when we conveyed our intentions ... To top it off, he uttered a lovely, sarcastic " ok, on ya way" as he curtly whisked away the menus and sundry from our table... And I thought hospitality businesses were doing it tough at the moment!? Seems this particular establishment must have plenty of paying customers lined up, so can treat patrons with contempt at...

Edit: 23.01.24 A friend encouraged me to give Florian another go and I'm relieved to say it was not a repeat of the previous two visits. Coffee was good, cheese biscuits and Florentine both very tasty. Service was cheery and swift. Keen to head back again soon for a proper meal.

We've eaten here twice and both times the food was tasteless and disappointing and the service extremely rude. If there's less than an hour until closing time you'll be greeted with grudging reluctance at best. Latte was ok, flat white...
