I've been a regular at Togs and have gotten to know the owners and staff over my multiple visits - what can I say, they're simply phenomenal. It's rare to find a small business where all the staff work so wonderfully together, and their exceptional service really shows.
The atmosphere is quintessentially Castlemaine - warm, welcoming, and wonderfully quirky. The interior is decorated with unique, handcrafted items that create a cozy, intimate setting. There are plenty of small, quiet nooks perfect for family gatherings or intimate conversations, and it never feels overwhelming or too loud. They're also impressively child-friendly, providing books, pencils, and high chairs for their younger guests.
The food consistently impresses me with its quality and attention to detail. It's clear they put real effort into their dishes - this isn't just cook-and-serve fare. Their homemade baked beans are a standout, and the chicken kofta salad is delicious enough to convert any salad skeptic. The Reuben sandwich is another highlight, though fair warning - the pickled vegetables that accompany it pack quite a spicy punch! The mushroom breakfast dish deserves special mention - it's absolutely five-star quality.
The coffee comes out promptly and while it might not win barista championships, it's reliably good. Beyond just being a café, they also house a deli and the cafe also has been a charming items for sale that's worth exploring. The outdoor seating area is particularly lovely on sunny winter days, offering a perfect spot for a leisurely meal.
One word of caution - I highly recommend booking ahead as it's consistently busy, which is a testament to its popularity with locals and visitors alike. The prices are reasonable for the quality you receive, making it an excellent value for breakfast or lunch. If you're looking for a genuine local experience with outstanding service, delicious food, and charming atmosphere, Togs is absolutely worth checking out. It embodies everything that makes...
Read moreThe food and atmosphere was perfect and the young waitress serving us was very professional. The older female staff member - perhaps the barista - was embarrassingly rude and her behaviour appalling. My husband was spoken to so rudely by her because he started drinking the wrong coffee which was given to him and not explained that it was decaf. This woman had absolutely no tact, was unnecessarily rude and was quite loud about it and felt she had the right to school my husband about drinking the wrong coffee in front of his visiting mother and family group as well as everyone in the vicinity. Spending over $160 for lunch for six people left a very bitter taste after receiving that serving from her. If she cannot handle a busy cafe perhaps she needs to find another job, preferably not dealing with paying customers. What should have been a lovely lunch with family was just horrible dealing with her...
Read moreDisappointing service. During my visit a staff member approached my table a placed a reservation place holder for 1pm. I was currently still finishing the coffee I had purchased. Soon after I was advised the booking had arrived. I asked staff if I could be moved to another indoor table and was abruptly asked if I was going to continue purchasing. I expressed I was still drinking my coffee and the member of staff walked away. When I approached to speak with management regarding my experience the same member of staff greeted me. It was explained that they had planned to come back and move me, however I had to follow this up as there was no communication. I left immediately after due to lack of respect of feeling very unwelcome. Would not recommend or...
