In line with the other more recent disappointed meals, last nights dinner was just “ok”, given the cost, I’d go as far as saying terrible. We’ve been to the teller 6 or so times over the past 2 years and something has changed!
We were sat at our table and left to our own devices with a leaflet in front of us that looked like an advert with a QR code. The QR code did not lead to a menu and eventually the person sitting on the table next to me had to tell me the menu was on the other side (she made the same mistake). The menu had also changed and was incredibly disappointing and a little weird.
The tellers drink service and options has always been a little poor, not something I ever worried anbout given the food was excellent. However a drinks list actually listing what they have regularly in stock would go a long way. Rather than me having to ask if they have gin and tonic, it wasn’t on the lists provided. I tried two of their gins suggested by the waitress, both were horrible and both served with lemon. The jack rabbit gin, which I later googled was a local GV gin, tasted like tequila, never again! I should have just had the Bombay. I could go on about my issues with the drinks list and the waitress running around with a piece of scrap paper to tell another customer what tea they had on hand, but I won’t….
The meals were disappointing. The entree options were weird, we wanted something and nothing really appealed, we caved and got the ham Gruyère croquettes. Which were just deep fried mush with very minimal ham pieces, regrets. We usually get the chateaubriand, unfortunately it’s gone up hugely in price ($110/person) and we decided to get the scotch, which we were then told was sold out. How can scotch fillet be sold out in a place that’s known for their steak on a Friday night?! We each ended up getting the wagyu.
The medium cooked steak was more like rare and both oddly had a reasonably thick line of gristle through it. We received our steak first, a couple of minutes later then chips and salad came out, when we had nearly finished the meal (after waiting quite some time and giving up) our carrot side finally came out. The carrot side was terrible. Not nice Dutch carrots cooked with honey or topped with almonds, or anything a little creative really. It was large chunks of carrot, oddly cooked and put on a bed of very bland pumpkin with bland barely on top and a couple of sprigs of dill. No flavour, no nicely thought out herbs or spices, I’m not sure salt was even used.
The people on the table next to me were raving about their snapper, then on the other hand a burger was sent back to the kitchen from another table due to it being raw. we had regrets for not going the cheaper option or to the incredible smelling Indian up the street we past on our way in….
My final comment would be that having the chef standing around talking to waitresses for most of the 1.5hrs that we were sitting there for was a very poor look. You can’t push out haphazard meals at haphazard timings and have chefs standing around doing nothing. Kudos to the other staff in the kitchen, they were working and clearly lacking a leader.
Sorry teller, without some drastic changes, we...
Read moreI have been visiting the Teller for about 4 years and have never had an issue, however after a recent visit i feel compelled to sadly write a negative review. Being the go-to place in Shepparton for Fine Dining, I booked a table for 4, to be seated outside. We had to go into the restaurant multiple times throughout the evening to get service or top up our wine (they had no ice wine buckets) during our visit. For one of the starters, we ordered oysters which were room temperature and after consuming the first one, I dared not eat a second. This was taken off the bill after I mentioned this to staff. The mains arrived and it was noted one of them was significantly smaller (and cut in half?) than the others. The prices in house have increased a fair amount than what the current listing on the website show, and for the prices charged, these issues (i feel) were unacceptable. We arrived at 7:45pm and did not receive mains until 9:30pm which is ridiculous for a few starters and steak mains. The restaurant was not overly busy for a Saturday either. We did let the staff know we were not particularly happy with the evening, however there wasn't much they could do and owners were not onsite to follow up with. Staff are very young now and didn't seem to have much guidance on a Saturday night service, with only 1 chef on duty. I did leave a review using their feedback system, but nothing has been actioned, so I feel obliged to share my experience. I believe the business was or may have already changed ownership - which may be a contributing factor to my most recent experience. Prior to this I have never had a bad meal or...
Read moreWent to this fantastic Restaurant on Good Friday night and was so impressed, my wife and and I went again on easter Saturday night. Friday night my wife had the Lamb Cutlets, pearl couches salad and spiced yogurt, I had the Seafood Linguini. bourse-blanc bisque clams, mussels and baby octopus. What fabulous taste sensations. We loved our meals so much , we went back on the Saturday night and I had the Smoked mussels, scollop, saffron Starter and the Lamb Cutlets for my main, my wife had The Porterhouse steak and salad. when i went to pay , the young chef came out and asked how the meal was. I told him that his meals were next level, this young man would be at home in any Fine Dining restaurant in any city in the world, My wife and I agreed that the meals we had in top restaurants in Paris were of this young man's quality. So happy we went to Shepparton and found this gem of a restaurant. We will return to Shepparton again , just to have meals at this restaurant. The service was second to none, great atmosphere, highly, highly recommend. Worth noting I had a restaurant in St kilda in the 1990's and have a passion for cooking and eating great food. Well done The Teller, I'am not a person who write's reviews, but happy to do this on this occasion. Jeanette and Mark ( the old guy...
