Pretty normal for the music and atmosphere, the service was slipshod, my food was dropped onto the table with a total lack of decorum. And the food. Well, I selected the meat free nachos for $26 What a rip off. A bowl with a pile of flavourless borderline stale nacho crackers, half a jar of old el paso salsa mix and half an avocado in a mashed dollop only just on the edge of the bowl. Oops almost forgot the garnish, a single stalk of old coriander. So appetising I almost swooned. I understand the concept of meat free food is a dangerous option, very radical, and only the enlightened can manage to prepare and present such avant garde requests, unfortunately the excuse for a chef, I hesitate to confer that title on the hopeless wretch preparing food this night, is far from one of those receiving such enlightenment. Very disappointed.
UPDATE. I appreciate your response, it is refreshing to see you taking on board the reviews of your customers. You invite me to your vegan weekend in October, which on the surface would seem good. However. I attended this event last year. On entering the venue I was confronted with an oyster bar. Selling death on your vegan weekend. Poor start but I am always willing to give the benefit of the doubt. Found a table sat down, caught the eye of the hapless staff member walking by and asked about the vegan event, the blank stare I received said much about the training and possible intelligence of said staff member. No idea what I meant and had to go ask someone for the vegan menu. The parmy was slimy eggplant poorly cooked and the rest of the order was ok, just. But spoiling the meal was the pile of shells building up on the table beside me that was not cleared for ages. My recent trip there was to give it another go. I doubt I will try again for a long time. I didnt leave a review then, maybe I should have and others would be spared similar experiences. The Rosemount is probably my new go to, or the ellington for a more...
Read moreI've been here twice in the past few weeks and have had a similar good (not great) experience both times. Once was for a quiz night... its good to see the venue bringing in such a big crowd for the event. We had dinner beforehand, I had the steak and Guinness pie, and I'd definitely buy it again. Unfortunately they've removed the only vegetarian full main from the menu permanently, so my partner had to go with a salad. The lady who served me seemed fairly miserable, but perhaps having just a bad day. Came in again today for my mums birthday. We had the same issue with a vegetarian meal, but also the chicken parmigiana was one of the worst I've had. It wasn't my meal, but I tried some for comparison. Very disappointing. I had the scotch fillet, and that was really nice. It would be good for the venue to sort out the menu, because otherwise it's a good place for a drink and a meal.
EDIT: After another visit for lunch to try their new menu (as Jen noted below), this was the worst experience yet. Firstly, we waited 1hr 15mins for our food. It wasn't that busy and can only be explained by a shortage of staff in the kitchen. I ordered the beef and Guinness pie, and they've also changed that, making it much worse, and charging more for it. My partner ordered the vegan burger, which was so overcooked she couldn't eat it. We regularly buy those same vegan patties, and they're so easy to cook there is absolutely no excuse for this. The upside to this visit is that the staff were all really nice, and everyone who served me was lovely, unlike previous experiences. 3 out of 3 times with bad experiences, we won't be returning, and I'm not even that fussy. I've managed licenced venues in the past, and the ALH model just is not working. Pay your staff more and arrange for backups so they there isn't a shortage when someone calls in sick. Unfortunately following this visit my rating has changed from 4 star (which was probably a little...
Read moreMy last review the Hyde Park was a suggestion to change their menu... at long last they did... but... as a Pescatarian, it was a joy to see more vegetarian and fish on the menu.. so with a bit of joy ordered the Humpty Doo Barra Fillet Burger.. Crumbed barramundi, cheese, lettuce, chunky tartare, toasted burger bun for $28.00. Barramundi? Was it? Crumbed like a rock with a thin slice of 'fish' inside, in a burger that must have glanced at the toaster, lettuce was wilted and barely covering the bun surface, cheese one of those peel of the plastic slices of cheese, now the chunky tartare was intrguing, where were those chuncky bits.. left in the jar it sure came from... all for $28.00!!! Sitting on a plate of forlorn tasteless chips, barely covering the space they were intended for... but not to be put off, returned to the Hydey as it is my local, and this time asked if I could have the fish grilled instead, 'no it comes pre crumbed, frozen' ... so its not fresh but straight from the packet to the deep fryer.. so instead opted for the Lentil and Chickpea Burger... as the menu reads: Red onion, tomoto, red onion (yes twice) pickles, greens, spice mayo, toasted bun.. all for $25.00. The bun still looking at the toaster, the red onion, printed twice, was only dare I say, a single quarter slither.. greens? I presume the piece of green stuff that barely covered the sliver of onion, and spicy mayo... nope! Not there... needless to say.. Come on, Hydey..your staff are fabulous, you get the crowds for the drinks, but the food, thank goodness, there is free parking and they allow your dogs to join in.. with...
