I had finished my first yoga in the park (at Hyde Park) session with Blooming Happy Yoga and was craving a hearty breakfast. So, I wandered through the Streets of Perth and stumbled across Sayers Sister, located at 236 Lake Street, and patiently lined up, as it was quite busy.
Since I was by myself, it was easy to get a spot. They put me in the middle at a big table, which was perfect. There was plenty of room and I could easily read my copy of Saturday’s West, something I love to do.
As I was about to sit down (with my yoga mat underarm) another customer told me I could try yoga on the table but that I wouldn’t have much luck! I got a real kick out of this and laughed out loud. These are the kind of incidental social interactions that make life rich.
The venue has a great vibe and the atmosphere is really chilled. There were good tunes playing through the speakers too. I was glad to have chosen this spot.
The décor is really cool, with candle style light globes suspended from the ceiling, along with lots of exposed brick, which lends a rustic feel to the venue. The selective use of (what I think is) stressed wood also adds extra charm. Throw in a few hanging plants and vintage saucepans on the wall and you’ve really got something.
Ultimately, you end up with a country vibe in the city, so you get the best of both worlds.
My meal was fantastic. I ordered the charred corn bruschetta, which comes with rocket, whipped feta, chimichurri, bacon and a poached egg, along with roasted nut dukkah and red pepper relish. I added an extra poached egg but that’s just personal choice.
The flavours melded together really well and I made sure to polish off the chimichurri (a kind of sauce) as it tasted particularly good. Overall, it was well made, very fresh and totally satisfying. I’d recommend it for sure.
I also ordered a cappuccino in a cup, which cost $4.50, which is great value these days. I was pleasantly surprised to find coffee in Perth for under $5. It was brewed well and complemented my breakfast nicely.
The menu is really extensive, with something for everyone. There’s the classic free range eggs, along with a beef and bacon burger. They also do French toast as well as Nutella cheesecake waffles, which sounds pretty awesome to me! There’s plenty of other choices too.
Sayers Sister is spacious and cosy all at once. Something about it makes it very welcoming. There’s lots of seating options – from the bench outside and the outside tables - to the comfy seats with throw pillows inside, along with the big table in the middle.
They even have sweet treats in jars on the big table in the middle. For a gold coin donation, you get to help out seeing eye dogs Australia, which is a great cause.
There’s plenty of choice when it comes to coffee. They have everything from your flat whites and espressos to the increasingly popular batch brew and cold brew. Not to mention they also have a honeycomb affogato, which I think I’ll have to come back for, as I’m intrigued by this!
They also have a good selection of cold drinks, including coke and ginger beer, as well as milkshakes (yay!) and ice coffee. Oh, and they also do fresh squeezed orange juice and juice of the day, along with iced tea. You’re spoiled for choice.
The staff are friendly and social, which is good to see. Plus, you can tell they really care. When I finished my meal, they didn’t just collect my plate - they asked how it was, and you could tell they were genuinely interested. This makes a difference to your overall experience. Oh, and they use local products that they prepare daily, which is also great to see, as it shows a passion for food.
Another nice touch I liked was an Octopus paper weight sitting on a copy of the West. As a lover of the ocean and the creatures within it, this made me feel like I was in the right place for breakfast. 😊
So, if you ever find yourself in Perth on a weekend, or a weekday for that matter, head on over to Sayer Sister. It’s funky, has great food and has a lot going for it. I know...
Read moreHi dear,
I would like to give my feedback in a constructive manner, because I respect the history of the place and believe in the potential of the team.
I arrived for lunch with my friend. He was at a table outside, but it started to rain. It was an uncomfortable situation when we asked to move to a table inside of the restaurant. A table for two was available, but a couple of women and a baby stroller made the chairs inaccessible. First impression: lack of consistency, disorganization. The table that they assigned us with some regret would have fit a group of 6 people. I understood. We sat on the side chairs so that there was space if another couple wanted to sit down. The coffee was served in take-away cups, even though we were there to dine in. I looked at the menus and placed my order at the cashier. The only fresh juice option “of the day” was carrot, celery, and something else written in a confusion board. The quality was questionable, but it had a nice presentation. My order came with an inedible pesto sauce, which ruined the flavor of the overcooked mushrooms. The quality of the bread was excellent, the light toasting made it crispy, but it could have had butter for the price of the dish. The pigeons came and went freely in the restaurant. It even had access to the open kitchen area. I would have turned a blind eye if the customer service was excellent, since I also work in hospitality. The cashier is on an island, next to it is the open kitchen and behind it are the bathrooms. All connected. I think it could benefit from some professional help to enhance and improve the mood of the restaurant. Including for the staff who work there. I saw they are embarrassed to be stomping pigeons through the door.
Let’s do better and do tastier food. Long live to your business.

Read moreI found Sayers Sister through a guide for the best breakfasts in Perth. I downloaded a menu from the website and saw they had potato rosti, which is one of my favourite breakfasts, so I decided on it and went in for some nosh. The place was quite busy which is a good sign. Table side service which is preferred, and got myself a coffee while I perused the menu again. The coffee was excellent, great crema as you can see. I ordered the rosti which is what I came for. It came out in good time and looked great. Unfortunately it wasn't great. One poached egg was underdone while the other was overdone. I was able to handle the undercooked one, but had to ask for another egg. A different waitress came back to ask for the overcooked egg to ask if I'd asked for hard (obviously not as I wanted another one), and helped her put it on a little plate to go back as proof. Which I kinda get, but made me feel awkward as I wasn't going to eat it. Anyway... The mustard was really strong, and the parmesan was very sharp, beautiful but sharp with nothing sweet to cut it. There's a sweet chutney, but it's cooked into the rosti... So it's not enough. I'd give Sayers Sister another go some time but won't be getting the...
