We first visited Biraz 4 years ago and had a wonderful experience, which is why we decided to return. It was a really authentic homely feel. Unfortunately, our second visit was a world apart from the first.
Despite arriving at 5:30 pm and the restaurant being empty (we had booked), we were rushed throughout our meal. The staff seemed disappointed when they realised that the sixth person in our party was a baby in a pram, which we had mentioned at the time of booking.
We were repeatedly asked if we were ready to order, with the staff checking in on us 4-5 times within 10 minutes of sitting down. Our starters arrived quickly, within 15 minutes, but the main courses were rushed out while some of our party were still eating their starters. The staff then proceeded to clear the main course plates while some of us were still finishing our meals. We were sat for a total of 1 hour…
To make matters worse, my sister, who is coeliac, specifically requested gluten-free pasta, but her meal contained normal pasta. When we brought this to the staff's attention, they dismissively told us that this was "normal." The staff's attitude was not very understanding throughout our meal.. perhaps it was a language barrier. Despite asking what they could do for her, we politely declined as we could not trust that the food would not be contaminated (we were expecting mild cross contamination with gluten being on the premises, but to be served normal pasta within the dish is not okay). They did take this and her glass of wine off the bill which was appreciated.
The pasta for everyone else was tasty, and the gluten free bread was nice however being rushed was not.
Overall, our experience at Biraz was disappointing and rushed. The kitchen's mistake with my sister's meal was unacceptable. Unfortunately, we will not be returning to...
Read moreWOULD NOT RECOMMED! Genuinely one of the worst experiences we've had at a restaurant. Granted we only dropped in for some dessert and Birraz is not a dessert place, but this place provided a bad ending to what was a great night. More detailed description below but in summary, extremely rude, unfriendly and unaccommodating staff. Overpriced and average food.
When we turned up we did not have a reservation but since the night was a bit cold we asked if we could sit inside since there was about 5 or 6 tables free. The waiter told us no and sat us outside, knowing very well that we are only here for dessert (I told him that). We asked 2 more times after we got sat outside if we could sit inside since none of the tables were being filled. Once we finished and left not one table was filled!
All staff we dealt with were extremely rude and unfriendly. The short Italian guy who sat us outside was rude and unfriendly. When I went inside to place our orders I had to wait for ages for anyone to even come to the bar to order. The bartender (worst of the lot) finally came to the bar so I said "hello, how are you" and I kid you not; he looked at me and then proceeded to wash his barmats without saying a word. A waiter then finally arrived and took me outside to take my order.
The food (the dessert at least) is overpriced and not good at that. The custard in our dessert was grainy and not smooth at all. The panna cotta was the smallest I've ever seen ($14) and also...
Read moreI recently dined at Birraz restaurant with my family and some friends, and it was an exceptional culinary experience. The Calabrese cuisine served here is truly a treat for the taste buds. The Nduja dish was nothing short of amazing, bursting with flavor and a perfect balance of spiciness.
The Casarecce Calabrese, another gem on their menu, was a delight. The pasta was cooked to perfection, and the sauce was rich and authentic. And let's not forget about the sausages; they were incredibly good, showcasing the skill and craftsmanship in the kitchen.
Speaking of the kitchen, Chef Simone deserves special recognition. His talent and passion for Calabrese cuisine shine through in every dish. His culinary expertise is the driving force behind the restaurant's success.
Egidio, the owner, made our dining experience truly memorable. His warm and welcoming hospitality added a personal touch that made us feel right at home. And Jack, the barman, crafted some outstanding cocktails that perfectly complemented our meal.
The ambiance at Birraz is cozy and evokes the charm of Italy. From the moment you step inside, you're transported to a comfortable and inviting space that exudes Italian charm.
In conclusion, Birraz restaurant is a hidden gem serving exceptional Calabrese food. With Chef Simone's talent, Egidio's hospitality, and Jack's mixology skills, it's an all-around fantastic dining experience. Highly...
