Little Banh Mi — Restaurant in Western Australia

This unassuming little restaurant's big secret is that the Banh Mi is awesome. When you walk in, the place seems a bit confused because it sells Vietnamese food, Western salad and ham rolls, sausage rolls, and even has a mini-mart where you can buy detergent and a lottery agency.

The Roast Pork Banh Mi comes in a decent sized roll which is flaky and crunchy on the outside and soft inside. They are quite generous with the pate and meat, and there is a lot of spring onion and coriander with a bit less of the carrot, turnip, and cucumber filling. This results in a really meaty Banh Mi with strong herb flavours and just enough of the pickled vegetables to lighten it. They add no sauce to the Banh Mi which is a good thing because every place that sauces its Banh Mi makes it messy to eat.

I have been here a few times and I would vote this as one of the best Banh Mi in Perth. Easily.

I have also tried the Pho, which is ... OK and not up there with other Pho restaurants. The broth is supposed to be a balance of umami, sweetness, beefiness, and freshness from the herbs. This broth errs towards the salty side with not much herbs or sweetness. I also think they use dried noodles from the texture (they are not bad noodles, just different to fresh noodles). The beef noodle pho does not have tripe, blood, cartilege, etc. which you get in more authentic places, but I can understand if you don't want these anyway. For me I love having them.

We went there around 12:30 PM on a weekday, the busiest lunch time. The place was packed, with many people waiting for food. Portion sizes were large, but the quality and taste of the dishes varied greatly, depending on the time and the cook. One of us ordered seafood kway teow, but it only had four pieces of seafood: one prawn, one squid, and two slices of fish cake (priced at $24). That felt like a rip-off. There were also not many noodles, with the dish mostly filled with vegetables. The pho was tasty, but they forgot to give us condiments. We asked for them, but the staff said they were busy, and the condiments never arrived. Other groups of people also seemed to be experiencing incorrect and forgotten orders. Most pathetic experience ever. Firstly, CHEF mixed the meat and messed up my order completely and my religion. The customer service girl at the counter Deanne was rude and started shouting at me. While I was still at the counter trying to talk she left and started to do her work and said get lost we cannot do anything. Chef came and also started to shout and said get lost and take your right order. When I requested if I can talk to the owner or manager on duty, they said we don't know where he is and cannot give you his number. Most terrifying experience and worst quality of food given to me today and I paid $19. They wasted my time, money and instead of apologising or compensating me, shouted and abused me in their language. Not recommended guys, please don't waste...
