Ah, Varsity Bar. I love this place. Located at Event Cinemas, Innaloo, Varsity has something for everyone. It’s a US sports bar and the owners have done very well to subtly transplant American culture into Australia (don't worry - there's still Aussie beer!). You just kind of go with it - everything from the baseball handles on the beer taps, to the American movie murals on the walls – think ‘Happy Gilmore’, ‘American Pie’ and ‘Dodge Ball’. These are movies from my youth, so the nostalgia factor definitely appeals to me.
I ordered the taco bowl salad, which was super tasty. I added charcoal (grilled) chicken, which was really nice. Since this was my second time ordering this dish, I asked for two serves of chicken, as you only get a small amount with one serve. This made the dish much more filling. As a huge fan of Mexican food, I was in heaven. With ingredients like burnt lime, black charred corn, sliced avocado and brown rice, it went down nicely. I washed it down with a lemon, lime and bitters, which complemented it well.
The burgers are great too – and they come with fries, which is awesome. I’ve had ‘the McFly,’ which I couldn’t go past, seeing as I’m a child of the 80s and ‘Back to the Future’ is one of my favourite movies. ‘The McFly’ is a double cheeseburger with blitzed (yep, you read that right 😉) pickles, lettuce, tomato, red onion and varsity mayo. I love it.
The other burgers have cool names too, like ‘the Notorious P.I.G' (rap fans will get it) and the 'Soulburger', which comes with a buttermilk fried chicken breast. There’s also the Big Kahuna (Hawaiian of course) and the Humungi Fungi, which is for vegans and yep, you guessed it, comes with mushrooms.
There’s plenty you can add on to your burger too – from grilled pineapple, a fried egg, jalapenos and everything in between. Ranging from $2 - $6, I think this is great value for sides. Did I mention sauce? Well, suffice it to say, Varsity have this in spades. I counted 16 - yes 16! sauces on their menu. Featuring the classic aioli and the relatively mild ranch, this line up also includes sweet and sour sauce, BBQ sauce and ‘Devil Sauce’, which on the menu is cheekily suffixed with ‘spicy AF’. I love it. This isn’t just a menu - it’s a culinary adventure!
Oh, you can also order chicken wings, jalapeno poppers and onion rings. Not to mention four kinds of loaded fries – the hog fries looked pretty good to me, with pulled pork, cheese whip, parsley and peach BBQ sauce – yum! As you can see, there’s plenty of options for those wanting to add a bit more to their meal.
For anyone not wanting a burger, they could go with one of the pizzas on offer. These look pretty good to me and range in price from $25 - $27. There are options like ‘Varsity Supreme’, BBQ chicken and pepperoni.
Oh, there's heaps of dessert options too! From soft serve to shakes and birthday cakes, it's a sweet tooth's nirvana. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the large drinks selection - with everything from beer, cocktails and wine, you'll never be thirsty!
The venue is huge, with plenty of high tables with stools inside, along with a few booths. There are plenty of big TVs too – I counted 14, along with two other massive TVs – one in the main section, the other tucked away in an alcove.
There’s also a courtyard that's roomy and is great on those hot summer nights that Perth puts on.
They play great music too. As a big rock fan, I was super excited when ‘Realize’ by AC/DC came on. It really enhanced the atmosphere and suited the venue down to the ground (similar to how they didn’t serve water at the bar in ‘Coyote Ugly’ – if you catch my drift!).
I happened to watch the 2024 Superbowl at Varsity Bar, and it was so much fun. Full of people and lots of raucous laughter and fun was had by all. From memory it was a pretty close game, but I’m not 100 per cent sure.
The Superbowl is happening on Monday next week - February 10. So, if you find yourself looking for a fun way to spend a few hours, head on down to Varsity Innaloo. It’s super fun and the staff are...
Read moreI love varsity a lot. Being a vegetarian, veggie burgers are usually basic and boring.
Here gives so many options to add to the burger to make it more interesting. Great selection of sauces too and sides. One of my favourites is the veggie loaded fries they are really really good.
I’ve ordered here sooo many times I could not count and something happened again so I had to leave a review in the hope the staff will see this.
Every single time I order , (actually once they didn’t do it just once!) I ask for no pickles, and my burger is covered.
The burger is 10/10 but this really bothers me as they are really small and fine and you cannot get them all off. The taste is always there after removing. It ends up removing the sauce from burger in process as they stick.
Please don’t have option remove if you do not actually do it. I don’t understand, as other notes in order are always followed but after happened again it annoyed me a bit.
Still will keep...
Read moreI had a deeply disappointing and troubling experience with Matt. His behavior was not only rude and impolite, but also shockingly unprofessional. He made inappropriate, racially insensitive remarks that made both me and others around visibly uncomfortable. This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in any workplace, especially one that involves customer interaction.
In addition to his discriminatory attitude, Matt was openly dismissive and disrespectful to customers. He seemed irritated by even basic questions and responded with sarcasm and hostility. It’s clear he lacks the courtesy and professionalism required for customer service.
I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously and addresses these issues immediately. No customer should have to experience this kind...
