This is a trip through time ; a delicious ,nostalgic dip into the Australian~Chinese restaurants of my childhood. I still remember my father coming home on my 11th Birthday ,announcing that a Chinese restaurant had just opened up in the heart of town and suggesting we all eat there .It was the first time I had tasted cuisine from another culture. I wasn't to know at the time, that the food had been adapted to suit the Western palate, but I loved it ! Even though my youngest son is now 18 and the experience was a long time ago I have very fond memories which I can re-live in the Fortuna Palace. The staff are lovely, the decor old school and the food is fresh and made on the spot .If "a blast from the past" is what you crave ,this is the perfect place ! Recently I had the deep fried sweet and sour fish .It was simple and fresh and so delicious and took me straight back to my 11th birthday dinner . It is on this basis I am giving the 4 stars. Read moreCame to Wollongong for some R & R with the family. Since our arrival, We been having nothing but maccars, fish & chips, steaks & pasta. Last meal before heading back to Sydney, the wife said lets give Chinese a try! So I found Fortuna Palace. A stand alone place near the shopping centre of Wollongong CBD, apparently kids friendly on review. From the appreance, it looks like it was left in the 80's. So I assume the dishes will have that tradition feel from local produce. The food for a lack of a better word, terrible. Black pepper steak should not taste sweet! In the 40 years I been alive. I have never had a Combination chow mein where noodles is almost nonexistent. Combination veg should not look like food scraps or a stage shy of compost. And when everything taste the same, u know there is something seriously wrong with the chef. I am sure this restaurant has seen better days and the steam rice was still eatable. I wouldn't take the family back...
