I've been coming to Disco Volante for several years, always thinking of it as one of the best pizza places in Vienna. However, my latest visit completely shattered my previous impressions. First, I had to wait a long time at the counter before I could even ask for a table, despite the restaurant being nearly empty and having spoken to a staff member earlier who wasn’t able to seat us. Moreover, the staff's attitude was dismissive and rude.
After we were finally seated, the service didn’t improve. Our order was taken in an unpleasant and rushed manner. Unlike before, where pizzas typically arrived together, only one of our two pizzas was served promptly. The usual quick preparation time for a Neapolitan pizza was ignored, leaving me waiting while several other tables received their complete orders.
When I inquired about my missing pizza, a waitress said she would check but then disappeared for another 10 minutes. Someone who arrived after us even received their pizza before mine was brought out. When my pizza finally arrived after what seemed like an eternity, there was no explanation or apology for the delay. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, the staff still didn’t apologize or attempt to make things right.
An apology and better handling of the situation could have changed everything. Most places would offer something to acknowledge their oversight and show goodwill, but not here. I'm not interested in freebies, but how a business manages customer service is crucial.
I had previously considered hosting a team event here, but that’s off the table now. I rarely write reviews, but this experience was noteworthy for all the wrong reasons. After the incident, the staff's behavior seemed to take a personal turn, which was both unbelievable and rude. They should strive to improve, not make things worse. Ironically, the server made a point to ask nearby customers if they were enjoying their pizza, yet ignored us.
Keep up...
Read moreDon’t go there. We had a really bad experience. I ordered a white pizza, with potatoes. The dough was successful but the dish was covered in oregano to such an extent that it was impossible to eat it. It was not possible to feel any other taste and it was really disgusting. Both my partner and I felt this way. I told the waitress, who took the pizza inside. Then another waitress came back with the same pizza and said that if I wanted they could make me a new one without oregano, but I would have to pay for both pizzas. After I told them that in a normal restaurant when the food doesn't taste good to the customer they return it and replace it or prepare a new one, she suggested that I take off everything on the pizza myself and eat only the dough. I admit, I have never returned a pizza in my life to the kitchen and I almost never send dishes back to a restaurant, even when I don't like it, but this was really on the level of inedible. Then the pizzaiolo himself came to our table to talk to us, in a way that was disrespectful and inappropriate, and explained to me that it was my fault that I don't like it that everyone eats the dish like that and if it's a matter of taste they don't intend to do anything about it. The whole experience was very unpleasant, the attitude was disrespectful and unprofessional and this is the last time I or my friends will come to this place. We got a 5% discount, which is a joke, it's less than a euro.
Also adding after having read their extremely disrepectful comment on how I almost ate all of the pizza, I find it really hard to believe that this is actually an existing business. I had to pay for a full very badly made pizza, so I removed all of the topping and ate only the dough. Unbelievable. Never again, and please anyone reading this, don’t go there, there are far far far better pizzas in this city, such as l’autentico at 1190 or la...
Read morePizza is fine, they're from Napoli but it's not the best in Wien. They use 00 flour (dough is white) instead of semolina, that is the biggest mistake for a - supposed to be - pizza napoletana. Second, the oven was colder than what it's supposed to be (around 400 °C): in fact the pizza I received wasn't uniformly cooked and the borders were RAW. A very serious problem. Luckily the cooked part was good, but the previous two issues are something I can't take. Probably it's so popular just because It's frequented almost exclusively by Austrians, who clearly don't understand how a pizza napoletana should be done. There's always too much time to wait to be accommodated, I think because it's "cool" and trendy for the young people of mariahilf. The waiters don't care so much to greet you once you arrive, but that's just the average bad Wiener service; the only Italians are the pizzaioli so don't expect the southern Italian friendliness here. I didn't like the restricted choice of ingredients, there are really too few. And I'm not talking about stuff like pineapple, they miss basic pizze such as 4 stagioni or 4 formaggi and I find this to be a serious lack. Prices are slightly higher than other pizzerie and this place is not even located in center, but in a residential area. The restaurant room for me was OK, my partner instead liked it a lot. So it depends by what you like. I might be not crazy about cause I've grown up in a pizzeria and I've seen every kind of pizzerie in my life, and for me this is not memorable. Without any personal offense. If you know what a real pizza napoletana is, you should go somewhere else. If you're hungry and you pass in front, go in without a problem, overall place and pizza are quite decent. I think it's good for people without a fine palate for pizza but personally I...
