We recently had the pleasure of dining at Pramerl and the Wolf, and I must say, it was an outstanding experience! Read morePramerl & the Wolf is an embarrassment to the Michelin guide. AVOID! While the food is tasty and very creatively presented, I have two key issues that you need to know about:
Their portions are so small that both my dining partner and I left hungry enough that we needed a snack after dinner. That's ridiculous for a 130 euro set menu.
Their business practices are deplorable! We had a reservation for 4 people and contacted them about reducing the reservation to 2 people since two people in our party were ill. They agreed to reduce the reservation without a word of any cancellation fee at any point before or during our meal there. A few days after we dined there, I saw a mysterious 400 euro charge from a company with a different name than the restaurant on my card and learned that this was from Pramerl for apparently not showing up. When I reached out to them both about the charge and the amount of the charge, they were very aggressive about it. I asked them “how can you charge a cancellation fee that is higher than the cost of dining there? The meal is 130 euro but cancelling costs 200 euro per person? I could have had all the extra food delivered to the table and taken home for leftovers and it would have been cheaper than your cancellation fee.” When I told him I was going to highlight their business practices with in my reviews, they accused me of extortion. I was appalled at their aggressive responses to my concerns, but felt compelled to warn other potential diners.
BEWARE!
We also dined at Mast Winebistro while visiting Vienna and had a MUCH better experience there. If you want a Michelin quality experience, go there instead and try their set menu that is only 85 euro, has a great staff, offers ample portions, and is even more...
Read moreWe had a lovely late seating dinner here. The atmosphere, music selection, interior design and attention to detail on the part of the staff was quite exceptional.
The reasons for 4 stars instead of 5 are: Menu: all the small bites and early courses we had were great, but the food fell off dramatically towards the end. The final 3 courses were all fairly forgettable or bad, as were the pairings that went along with them. That’s not the ending you want out of a meal that’s costing more than 500€ per person. Wine pairing: we ordered the deluxe wine pairing. In hindsight, we should have ordered one regular, one deluxe, to try the dishes with the different wines. Our server should have suggested that. More unfortunately, some of the wine pairings were not well done, we were served one pairing of a really really young (not super drinkable) Oregon red that absolutely did not belong in the cost category of the deluxe one pairing. Supplement: We ordered the caviar addition and the caviar we got absolutely did not justify the cost of the supplement. Service: the couple next to us were regulars, it seems, and they received very different service than we did. I completely understand wanting to spoil your regulars, but in a context like this one, it’s rather off putting to the experience to see a different table have so much more attention and care paid to them.
I’ve spent plenty of text highlighting where I think this restaurant could improve. It was a great meal and some of the dishes were exceptional, as were some of the wines. The problem is, I expect exceptional throughout at a price point...
