Nives — Restaurant in Antwerp

Lovely atmosphere but absolutely terrible staff and treatment. Was over with my partner 20min before they shut and ordered a hot drink. My partner didn’t get anything as they would be shutting soon, but after seeing people coming in after us getting glasses of wine and cocktails, she thought she might as well get a cider. When ordering at the counter, the girl completely disregarded her and ignored the order without barely looking at us. I’d understand if they were just about to shut but as mentioned, there was still 20min to go but more importantly, 2 min before we saw people ordering drinks and getting served. It did feel directed and pointed maybe for being foreigners?? Definitely not for being gay, as the place seems to be inviting in those terms, but not very keen on the non Dutch speaking clientele it seems. Prachtig pand en omgeving met enorm veel potentieel. Helaas is het onvoldoende benut, vind ik. Desondanks zat de zaal vol en kwamen klanten af en aan. Bij binnenkomst ervaarde ik geen warm gevoel, eerder kil en afstandelijk. Onder het personeel hing geen sfeer, men werkte in alle stilte. De vrouw die ons bediende was niet hartelijk, stuurs, randje onbeleefd. Alsof het allemaal tegen haar zin was... Bijzonder dat men dit probleem dit aanpakt, want het keert regelmatig terug als kritiek. Open atelier, leuk om te zien hoe het brood enzovoort... vers wordt gebakken. Broodrek, stockage van diverse droge voedingswaren staan in de verbruikszaal, dit alles zeer vreemd, toch? De toog langs de zaal staat vol rommel, service enzovoort... Plaatsgebrek? Misschien een andere oplossing voor zoeken? Dan hetgeen we gedronken/gegeten hebben. Smaakvolle thee, met matig tot goede viennoiserie. De croissant was, tja... Hoe druk ik dit uit, onvoldoende gebakken, had niet de textuur die deze klassieker hoort te hebben. Uit niks bleek dat diegene die ze gemaakt heeft de juiste skills/vakmanschap bezit. Hun croissant ziet er zelfs niet uit als een croissant, maar kostte wel 3 EURO ! Het chocoladebroodje was lekker. Het worstenbroodje was het beste van de drie. Attent dat ze er scherpe graanmosterd bij serveren. Om positief af te sluiten, hun huisbrood is ZEER lekker. Krokante korst, niet zuur. Voor het brood zou ik terugkomen, voor de sfeer...

The only place to have a nice coffee and get some decent pastry around the Harmonie—park area. Nives has a large outdoor seating overlooking the children’s playground, right next to the newly renovated city hall. The beauty of Nives is the flexibility from coffee to breakfast to apero in the sun.
