Amigo is a restaurant in Ghent located a bit outside the city center, so it has a more local feel without the usual tourist crowd. The cuisine is an interesting fusion of European and Mexican flavors, so it’s worth noting that some dishes can be quite spicy. The menu is based on small plates meant for sharing, which makes it a nice choice for groups.
They also have an interesting wine list; however, I was a bit disappointed to find that the vintages listed weren’t accurate, as they didn’t have the correct years for the wines I chose. That was a bit frustrating, but the food more than made up for it. We arrived a bit late, but they kindly accommodated us, which I really appreciated—especially in a city where restaurants tend to close their kitchens early by Spanish standards!
Overall, Amigo is a good spot to explore if you enjoy Mexican flavors and want to try something...

Expect about 4-5 tapas per person, summing up to 80 euros per person counting the drinks (which are also quite expensive compared to other restaurants).
Real shame, cause I would've liked to try more of the dishes, but it's simply not worth it knowing that there are tapas bars in Ghent where you'll pay just a fraction for the same quality and more quantity... The dishes I tried were definitely good though!
The setting is also kind of an issue imo. Yes, the terrace is nice, but you have a LOT of noise from the busy binnenring. So it's odd for a restaurant like this to profile themselves...
Read moreAs the name would lead you to believe the menu has some spice, but, this is definitely not a Mexican restaurant. My ribeye came out quickly, garnished with a spicy pico de gallo, a nice touch. Cooked the way I like it. Maybe a pinch too much salt. Not as large as I had hoped. So I ordered the Broccolini, which came with a cold bean puree, and a small crumble of peanuts. This worked quite well. Finished with an espresso. Plenty of interesting cocktails on the carte, but I didn't imbibe. The owner was quite personable. The clientele was subdued....
