Friday Market (Vrijdagmarkt) in Ghent is a true oasis of history, vibrant and social contact - ideal for those who love the past, market and authentic atmosphere of the city. It is one of the largest and oldest of the Ghent. Since 1199 it has been hosting a regular market every Friday morning, creating years now a living pole where locals and visitors meet, buy fresh produce, flowers and crafts. In the center of the square is the statue of Jacob van Artevelde, the well -known 'wise Ghent'. The position of the square makes it an ideal starting point for wanderings in Ghent: nearby historical monuments such as the Cathedral, the Gravensteen Castle and the Patershol Graphic neighborhood, adding value to the visit The square is a place where history, social life and art are harmoniously intertwined. Whether you want to be left in the daily routine of the city, or you are looking for a solid dose of history to explore, this square invites you to discover it in...
Nice, sunny square. On Saturdays, they have a big market here, but they mostly sell low-quality Chinese goods. I don't recommend shopping the merchandise, but the walk and photos are a must! Symphony orchestras are often performed on an improvised stage, which you can enjoy while sipping your drink in the nearby bars or just sitting on the benches in the square. I recommend the walk through the historic city of Ghent to start from here! And why not finish!
Read moreThe Jacob van Artevelde monument is located in the centre of Vrijdagmarkt in the Historic City Centre of Bruges. This is the works of Ghent sculptor DeVigne-Quyo (1863).
Here you find a bronze statue of Flemish patriot, anti-French statesmen and politician from Ghent during early 14th century, standing proudly and pointing forward and to the right. He is in military attire with belted swords.
The statue stands upon a pedestal decorated with various guild coats of arms and surrounded by four female figures. It is an interesting monument composition and worth spending a few minutes to enjoy if planning to spend time at Vrijdagmarkt during your...
