A small collection over-curated. The machines are generally behind barriers. The main collection on the top floor has been put in little rooms to keep them in the dark. I think this is to make the overwhelming number of screens dominate the rooms. I'd rather see the machines. It's mostly social history up there, which misses the opportunity of showing how the machines work, what they ARE. Is that because most of the machinery was imported from England? The printing section is better, with more opportunity to see the machines because they are in the open. With most of them, it's a view from a distance though. The weaving section was ok but unwelcoming... Really it's set up for guided tours rather than individual visitors. As a whole the museum has a sterile feel, no oil, no noise, none of the atmosphere of the mill it once was. There's a striking statue in the garden, it appears to be Joseph Stalin. No...
Read moreThis was so interesting, an Industrial Museum. A large collection of textile and print machinery, some of which were in use in print shop late last century.
Fantastic experience for those who lived with these machine as well as intriguing for looking back on how we have got to where we are. There is lot to see and show machines are operated by museum staff, so you can see them working! Seems to have a lot of things for younger visitor to try there hand at.
Nice small gift shop sells postcards printed on the presses and housewares woven on the looms.
Had a nice small cafe, which we didnt try but seemed lovely to stop in at.
Will take about 1.5 hours to experience it all.
Definitely recommend the museum and will pop in again when next...
Read moreThe woman on reception was the most welcoming person ever. She introduced the MIAT to us explaining what was on each floor. The displays were interactive and would be great for older children. The video presentations by actors of characters in history was fantastic. So good in fact we had to remember to look at the details in each room. There were some unique presentation ideas with screens made from ropes that were an impressive use of space. There were loads of old machinery on display, films of them in operation and also some weavers and textile artists operating looms and creating product. A recommended 40 minutes for the 5th and 2nd floors. The print floor was closed for renovation when...
