Café de Buffel — Restaurant in Ghent

1- We settled on a table, gave our orders from the menu. (cheese plate, caraf of wine, beer) 2 minutes later another waitress came and she asked if we have reservations. We said no, and she said that table is reserved already. But there was NO RESERVATION sign on our table, despite some other tables have RESERVED sign. When we told this, she told us she will bring the sing, and she brought it in seconds put it on our table even didn t wait for us. She said if there is an empty table we can sit back side of the restaurant. We went to the back side of the restaurant, fortunately found an empty table outside area. All other waitresses are so polite and nice, only the one with a buffalo tattoo on her arm was the rude one... 2- There was a dead animal smell (probably rat) around outside area. I could smell it when the wind blows. 3- When we ordered cheese plate, we had asked if there are different type of cheese on the plate or only 1 type of cheese. Waitress told us it s with different type of cheese. But there was clearly only one 1 type of cheese on the cheese plate. Final : I don t know if their customer relations & service always like this way, maybe we didn t order enough things to deserve a table inside, however this is my review about this place i visited FIRST...

This place was recommended by someone at our conference venue and was a short walk from my hotel. The server was very nice, switching to English once he found out that was my only language. I asked what his favorites were from the menu and I ended up with the lamb medallions with potatoes au gratin and sautéed whole carrots. The lamb was tender and had a very nice red-wine sauce. The potatoes had caramelized cheese on top. I am not a huge carrot fan but I ate all except for one because I was too full. The restaurant was pretty crowded for a weeknight. I ended up in the back but that meant I could watch the cooks prepare the meals. They were quick and enthusiastic. And they worked really well together. My only complaint was that the background music was a little loud. But maybe they were trying create an environment with a certain vibe. My meal happened to be the most expensive dish on the menu, but it was...

A place with potential, however, we were a group of friend of 7. 2 hours after ordering, we received the wrong starters, they eventually admitted that plenty of things went wrong with our order. The food eventually came and was mediocre. We “jokingly” suggested that a free shot on the house would be appropriate, but we were met with a very arrogant attitude of the server.

I’m rating this place based on food and experience, which you will visit it for. However, if the staff would have received us with a smile and would have been willing to set their wrong right, I would have never wrote this review and just blame it on “one of those difficult nights”
