Lokaal — Restaurant in Ghent

Lokaal in Ghent is a gem of a small restaurant that has left a lasting impression on our taste buds. Focusing on fermentation and vegetarian dishes, this cosy place offers a delightful culinary experience. We had a burger with a delicious bean patty and the special of the day (focciacia with portobello mushrooms) and both were delicious. What really set the dishes apart from other restaurants was the variety of fermented vegetables, which added layers of flavour to every bite. Portions were generous and satisfying. The homemade drinks, including their kombucha and fermented iced tea, complemented the food perfectly.

The pleasant ambience, coupled with the efficiency and warmth of the one staff member who managed the busy crowd with ease, added to the overall dining experience. A great vegan option, and also a chance to explore vegetables that you probably have never eaten/seen before. Every meal is always a little discovery. Also, I personally love the concept of offering limited options that change every week, as this guarantees that they spend a lot of effort in making these items. Very friendly staff. They also helped me organise a little birthday party for my wife in the BC (before corona) era. For me, it is the one of they very few restaurants we frequently visit in Gent. We had a very nice lunch at this cosy, tiny place. The dish was a very tasteful, fresh and surprising combination of local and seasonal goods. We didn't know in advance there was one option for lunch only, so unfortunately for my friend there was nothing she could eat apart from the soup. When we arrived, we were told our reservation wasn't registered, but that she would cancel the reservation of a family member for us. We weren't the only people with this issue.
