A seven course experience at Souvenir Restaurant tonight!

We kicked off the evening with a delicious gin cocktail with an elderflower liquor and crowned with a green-tea foam on top (brought back delicious memories of the amazing pisco- sours from my days in Santiago de Chile!)

Some of the highlights were: A lightly poached and then grilled mackerel, with a decadent cured egg yolk (salted, cured for a few hours then washed then lightly smoked), with local forest mushrooms, in an green tea spuma, and an earthy shitake pastille as a base! Dreamy!

Then came the eggplant, lightly roasted over an open fire (without the jacket), succulent and meaty, lacquered with a miso-inspired caramelized onion glaze. Could’ve eaten ONLY this for dinner and would have been perfect as well!

Of mention (but too delicious to wait and photograph, hence not pictured here!) was also an innovative sunflower seed ‘risotto’, with a green tea reduction cradling a creamy piece of local cheese (evokes memories of a rich tallegio), with a delicate herbed chiffonade of local micro-greens.

The grand finale (of the savory courses) was a Lightly poached cod loin (like a cloud gently descended on our plate!) with a roasted spinach leaf cluster, and a delectable, tangy hollandaise emulsion, accompanied by (never had this before!) ‘oyster-leaves’ (grown near the Belgian coastline) which taste just like freshly shucked oysters, transporting you to the seaside on a sunny day, a perfect counterpoint to the rich sauce, with an oyster spuma to highlight the lightness of the final course. Just exquisite!

Difficult to pick a versatile wine with these courses, but the Austrian pinot noir did just splendidly, and never masked the unctuousness of the dishes.

Highly recommended! Restaurant is only 3 months old but the chef is a pro, with a deft hand at several different styles, an innovative flair, and a near obsession with showcasing local...

Subject: Comedy of Errors at Souvenir - An Unforgettable Night of Absurdity Prepare yourselves for the tale of our epic misadventure at Souvenir in Ghent – a performance that left us questioning if we accidentally stumbled into a hidden camera reality show. Picture this: Half an hour before our 7:30 PM reservation, we were held hostage by the slowest Christmas service in the universe at a nearby bar. We decided to give Souvenir a heads-up about our 10-minute delay. Little did we know we were about to enrol in a "How Not to Host" masterclass. The response? A resounding "Nope!" The host/owner, who seemed to have mistaken her restaurant for a military boot camp, insisted that it must be literally exactly 7:30 PM, not a single minute late. A novel approach to customer service, we thought. With no options, we reluctantly agreed. But wait, it gets better (or worse). A mere five minutes later (still well before our booking), the Drill Sergeant called back, informing us that she had given away our table to someone at the door and we were left without dinner. Apparently, our assurances weren't convincing enough for the reservation gods. If Souvenir aimed to deliver a memorable (and bizarre) experience, they succeeded, albeit not in the way they might have intended. Bravo, Souvenir, bravo. Al twee keer geweest. Eerste keer was OK, ik zou 4/5 geven.

Bij een tweede reservatie hadden we telefonisch de reservatie verplaatst.

De dag na de initieel geplande datum kregen we telefoon, om te vragen waarom we niet waren komen opdagen daags ervoor. Er was geen spoor meer van de wijziging. Dat moesten we zelf ook maar uitgevogeld hebben, want "ze sturen normaal altijd een e-mail bij een verplaatsing". Tja.

Erg onvriendelijke dame aan de telefoon, blijkbaar de gastvrouw, die in plaats van constructief een oplossing zoeken ons enkel kon verwijten dat het onze fout was. En in plaats van ons dan toch te ontvangen op de tweede datum, koos mevrouw ervoor om een no-show fee van 120 EUR in rekening te brengen op onze creditcard.

Ik kan iedereen dus aanraden om een eventuele aanpassing van een reservatie enkel via mail te regelen, zodat u een bewijs op papier heeft. Bij het online reserveren moet u immers uw kredietkaartgegevens achterlaten, waarmee mevrouw de betwiste kosten gewoon in rekening heeft kunnen brengen.

De volgende keer ga ik alvast naar een restaurant waar ik geen schriftelijk bewijs nodig heb als ik een reservatie heb verplaatst en waar mijn partner niet wordt uitgekafferd aan de telefoon door een dame die ervan overtuigd is dat ze de waarheid in pacht heeft.

De gastvrouw heeft hieronder een reactie geplaatst, waarin ze beweert dat ik zou hebben aangeboden om "mijn review tegen betaling te verwijderen" en wekt daarmee de indruk dat ik deze review met die bijbedoeling zou hebben achtergelaten.

Ik wil benadrukken dat ik deze review in eer en geweten heb nagelaten, en ik dat enkel heb gedaan omdat mevrouw op geen enkel moment bereid is gebleken om een schappelijke oplossing te zoeken.

Slechts toen mevrouw een advocaat op mij heeft afgestuurd (!) naar aanleiding van deze review, heb ik een specifieke bewoording in mijn review aangepast en heb ik laten weten dat ik bereid was het in mijn review te vermelden mocht mevrouw alsnog een schappelijke oplossing gezocht hebben.

Dat is dus niet gebeurd, en dat had ik ook niet verwacht. Als mevrouw immers te goeder trouw was geweest, had ze ons de avond zelf wel opgebeld om te vragen waar we bleven, en hadden we er 10 minuten later...

I had a fabulous meal!! It was on par with other Michelin starred restaurants I’ve been to around the world. Amuse was spectacular and unexpected, the different courses were playful and stellar. I had the 3-course meal with the langoustine and cheese add ons. It was more than enough food as portion sizes were generous without being too much. Every course was perfect and so delicious. Service was spectacular, with someone describing very dish and wine and checking on me every few minutes. I also had the wine pairing which was perfect for each course. The staff was so knowledgeable about their wines and made great recommendations for my extra courses.

The 3-course lunch was just right! 33 EUR, very reasonable. Bread: +5 EUR. The bottle of rosé wine at 38 EUR is fairly acceptable, but a glass of 7cl (max) of the same wine at 8.45 EUR is a bit exaggerated. Overall good experience!

This is just one of those places where you have to trust whatever the chef is feeling at that specific moment. No meat during our menu, which was absolutely fine by us. Loved the chill vibe, the nice music and cosy interior. Food was exquisite and a lot of attention to detail in every single dish. Some were very to the point and pure while others had a lot of layers to it. Extremely recommend dropping by for a nice dinner with your loved ones!

This is just one of those places where you have to trust whatever the chef is feeling at that specific moment. No meat during our menu, which was absolutely fine by us. Loved the chill vibe, the nice music and cosy interior. Food was exquisite and a lot of attention to detail in every single dish. Some were very to the point and pure while others had a lot of layers to it. Extremely recommend dropping by for a nice dinner with your loved ones!
