Gero is an Italian restaurant inside the Fasano hotel in Rio de Janeiro known for its good cuisine, but our experience was unfortunately less positive. Upon arrival we politely asked to change tables, this request was granted, but afterwards things turned out a little differently than expected. Instead, they tried to offer us champagne straight away, before we had even seen a drinks menu or the menu. After we had refused the champagne and wanted to see the menu first, we were brought a plate with Italian bread and three types of tapenades. So far everything has been fine. We ate two pieces of ciabatta, after which the bread plate was replenished with two new ciabattas-pieces. However, when the bill came, we were unpleasantly surprised: the bread was charged twice as “couverts” for a total amount of 80 Brazilian reals!!! Thats about 20 euro on bread! We found this to be grossly exaggerated and unacceptable.
Moreover, we were also surprised by a similar situation with the water. Although we asked for only one bottle of water, two were placed on the table without asking. This felt not only excessive, but also a bit pathetic, considering we had no need for additional water and it seemed unnecessary to burden us with extra charges for something we didn't order. These extra touches without our consent contributed to an overall feeling of discomfort during our dining experience at Gero. Although the food itself was of good quality, unfortunately we cannot ignore the unpleasant surprise of the bill. Together with the service charge of 50 euros (more then 200 Brazilian Reals) that we better asked to be taken off the bill.
We first contacted Gero to get more clarity and to share our experience, but unfortunately there appeared to be no interest in our feedback. For us, this is a missed opportunity for the restaurant, because this is absolutely not good advertising. If you eat at Gero, enjoy the delicious food, but check your bill carefully and be clear about what you will and will not accept. Despite the tasty dishes, such practices can really ruin your experience! We are writing this review to warn others that Gero has a tendency to inflate the bill with additional charges. We think this kind of practice is absolutely unacceptable and is reason enough for us not to...
Read moreWe had a very bad experience. We entered the restaurant and the waiters came to give us the menu and they did not explain anything about the menu. First they gave us a wine list and we had to ask about the food menu. Then we wanted to ask for wifi and the waiter said "just a moment" and left... it was just a little bit to give us the access... there was an atmosphere of bad vibes. We got up and left. The truth is, terrible service... a shame because the place looks very good from the outside, but they clearly want to show that they are an exclusive place, and I would say more than exclusive it is for "VIP" people, who little know about good service. and a clarification. We had more than 300 dollars to spend on dinner. We were not interested in the cost. clearly the place is...
Read moreFantastic ambiance and top notch service. Food leaves much to be desired. Breads were generally excellent, butter average, as are the sundried tomato and classic pesto.
Appetizers, mains, and desserts were all very underwhelming. The scallop trio had one that was over-salted. The lobster pasta although al dente, had very little depth and balance in the sauce. The profiteroles were fine - the ice cream that came with it was surprisingly crystallized. Disappointing overall for a restaurant housed in Fasano. That said, kudos to the mixologist. The cocktail...
